Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are gearing up for a reality TV comeback after losing their home to the Palisades fire, for which they're suing the City of Los Angeles. The couple have been through a lot since The Hills, with fans doubting their relationship.

But they've been married since 2008 and are now parents to two boys. Unfortunately, their career had been at a standstill until their recent tragedy. "Faking it till you make it," like Spencer has owned up to, hasn't always worked. It even led to them losing their $10 million fortune.

It's no secret that their breakout MTV series was stuffed with staged storylines. While Spencer regrets fabricating a villain image, he equally regrets not faking it all the way and accusing Heidi of cheating on the show. He even knows exactly who she'd be fake-cheating with.

Speaking with E! News in October 2023, Spencer shared that Vanderpump Rules' "Scandoval" made him think he should've accused Heidi of cheating on him back on The Hills. "We were just discussing that after watching how big the Scandoval Vanderpump thing is," he told the outlet.

Spencer explained: "We definitely should have had more cheating in our storyline because clearly cheating now is mainstream. 'Great, everyone loves cheaters!'"

ICYMI, Tom Sandoval is still booked and busy following the controversy. Heidi then clarified that it was all her husband's idea. "This is Spencer's take," she said. "He wanted to accuse me of cheating with [Brody Jenner]. It would have been a one-man storyline..."

In 2016, Spencer accused The Hills producers of "stealing" his and Heidi's idea for a "'newlyweds get engaged and get married' miniseries." It was meant to be a "special that would have been, like, six episodes, that would have aired while The Hills was on a break, in between seasons," he said.

Spencer was referring to the network filming him giving Heidi a promising ring in August 2007, making it seem like he was proposing. They eloped in Mexico the following year, and their "scripted" U.S. wedding was later featured in Season 5.

In 2018, Spencer came clean about how he "got into manipulating the media" during his days on The Hills. He admitted he was "getting paid so much money to be just an awful a**hole" on the show.

"I just figured that we could come up with these stories, and work with the magazines, and give them that juicy, gossipy stuff that they usually have to make up," he shared. The couple famously arranged paparazzi run-ins, too.

"Why not help make it up with them… and get paid for it?" Spencer continued.

Spencer had a master plan coming into the show in Season 2. After seeing The Osbournes, he knew he could do even better as creator and executive producer of The Princes of Malibu (canceled after two episodes in 2005), starring Caitlyn Jenner's sons, Brody and Brandon.

"They were getting 60 million viewers to watch—with due respect to Ozzy—a British guy mumbling and his wife yelling, cleaning up dog poop," Spencer recalled. He then came up with "Speidi," which happened to work out for them even in real life.

After losing their home to the Palisades fire on January 7, Spencer asked fans to stream Heidi's flop 2010 album, Superficial. "Please stream any of [Heidi's] music on any platforms it will make a huge difference! Thank you," he said, drawing mixed reactions online.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have an estimated combined net worth of $2 million as of January 2025.

Spencer then addressed the haters, saying: "I have been 'faking it till you make it' since 2007. Guess what? Faking it till you make it, doesn't make it. Especially when everything burns down." He was real for that...

After making a substantial amount of money from their GoFundMe, fans have also been advocating for Spencer and Heidi's TV return. They may be getting a Hulu docuseries soon. But nothing's been confirmed as of this writing.
