Squid Game: The Challenge has been renewed for a third season! The news comes even before Season 2 has aired, but will be welcomed by fans of the show.
It is also no surprise that Netflix has chosen to create another season, given the massive success of Season 1, which premiered in November 2023. Season 2 of the hit reality TV show will be available on Netflix on November 4, and 456 new contestants will compete for a $4.56 million prize, Deadline reports. The unscripted series, produced by Studio Lambert and The Garden, is a competition in which contestants will endure the "ultimate test of strategy, alliances and endurance," the synopsis reads. But what else do we know about Squid Game: The Challenge Season 3?
Everything To Know About 'Squid Game: The Challenge' Season 3
When the renewal of Squid Game: The Challenge was announced for a third season, Netflix also posted an open casting call for contestants, describing it as a "chance to be part of Netflix's biggest unscripted series."
"Think you have what it takes to pull off that iconic green tracksuit, make shrewd social connections inside the dormitory, and outlast the competition?" Tudum by Netflix reports. Applicants must be at least 21 years old to apply. Future players can also be recruited through Squid Game: The Experience in New York and London, which the publication states will receive "priority in the casting process, though this does not guarantee they will be selected to take part in Season 3."
Based on the statistics of Season 1, the chances of getting an opportunity to compete are slim. The publication reports that around 81,000 people applied to take part in Squid Game: The Challenge Season 1 (which has been inspired by the Korean hit series Squid Game). The winner? Mai Whelan, also known as Player 287.
What Has 'Squid Game: The Challenge' Season 1 Winner Mai Said About Competing?
Whelan made the finale along with two other contestants, Sam, also known as Player 016, and Phill, also known as Player 451. She ultimately emerged as the winner of the series, which began airing in November 2023, with the finale airing on December 6. Beating out 455 other players in a back-to-back elimination challenge is an impressive achievement, and the money that comes with it sweetens the deal.
Whelan gave an interview to Tudum by Netflix, sharing her thoughts on competing and getting back to everyday life. "It was a relief to go back to normal life and not worry about getting eliminated. I needed that after two and a half weeks of intense go, go, go, and emotional ups and downs," she said. "But the person that came into [the competition] is me. I'm still Mai, and she hasn't changed — except that I came out stronger."
She continued, "Every day was fear for me — fear of getting eliminated, or fear of getting picked on. It was a real fear coming from deep inside me." Now we wait to see who will win Season 2, and later Season 3!
