When most people hear the name George Lucas, there is one thing that comes to mind, Star Wars. Given that Star Wars arguably is the most influential movie franchise of all time, that makes a lot of sense.
Even though George is known for Star Wars, the truth is that he has accomplished so much more during his career. In fact, George likely may be in the twilight of his career, but the fact is he has accomplished a lot since he sold Lucasfilm in 2012.
Thanks to everything George has accomplished, he has amassed a fortune so large that he is richer than many of the biggest movie stars combined. Considering that George has four kids, it seems obvious to assume they will inherit his fortune when he passes.
As it turns out, George has revealed that when he passes, he will not be leaving a lot of his incredible fortune to his family. While some people may assume that there is a scandalous reason for that, it turns out that George has an incredibly admirable reason to not give his kids all his money.
How Much Money Is George Lucas Worth?
Ever since George Lucas wrote and directed the movie now known as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, he has often been heralded as a visionary. While it sometimes seems like that word gets thrown around too easily, it is fitting when it comes to George.
Most famously, George was one of the key people behind the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises. On top of that, George wrote, directed, or produced movies like American Graffiti, Labyrinth, and Willow among others.
On top of what George has done as a writer, director, and producer, it could also be argued that he pushed the technology side of filmmaking forward more than anyone else in history. After all, George founded companies like Lucasfilm, ILM, THX, and Pixar among others. No wonder other filmmakers love George and he is close friends with Steven Spielberg.
Thanks to all of those amazing accomplishments and everything else he has done, George has a $10 billion fortune as of this writing according to celebritynetworth.com. In case anyone is curious if there is a typo, yes, that is billion with a b.
How Much Money Will George Lucas's Kids Get In Inheritance?
When the world learned the details of the deal George Lucas made to sell Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, most people were blown away. After all, that deal was massive in more ways than one.
First off, as a result of the sale, Disney gained ownership over two massive film franchises, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. On top of that, Disney also purchased the rights to movies like Willow, American Graffiti, and Labyrinth.
On top of it being a big deal that Disney owned all of that intellectual property, it was mind-blowing to learn how much money George got from the deal. After all, Disney paid the staggering sum of $4 billion in Disney shares and money for Lucasfilm.
By the time George made the deal to sell Lucasfilm, he already had more money than he could ever spend. With that in mind, many people were left wondering what George could possibly due with an additional $4 billion.
Much to George's credit, it didn't take him long to explain his plans for that money and what he had in mind was extremely admirable.
Instead of hoarding money as most billionaires do, George pledged to donate the money he made from the Lucasfilm deal to fund education. “George Lucas has expressed his intention, in the event the deal closes, to donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors.”
A couple of years before Lucas made the deal with Disney, he'd already made another pledge to use his money to invest in education. According to George's 2010 pledge, he was going to use most of his fortune to help humanity.
"I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future – and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children."
"As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt – as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so."
Based on everything George has said about his plans for his wealth, it seems clear his kids won't get their hands on most of his money. While it isn't clear what percentage of George's fortune will go to his kids, it does seem very likely they will still receive a staggering sum.
