What goes on during the commercial break? That is a question late night show fans have always asked. In Jimmy Fallon's case, it appears as though The Tonight Show might be better off-camera. Fallon shared a snippet of his interview during the commercial break with Jerry Seinfeld, and it did not disappoint as the two took questions from the audience.

It seems like Stephen Colbert is just as entertaining. During his breaks, Colbert keeps things interactive with his audience and takes on questions of his own. In this particular moment, Stephen was asked about his nemesis, Donald Trump. Given that the show wasn't airing, Colbert issued quite the response and one that would have never made it on the air with CBS. Let's recap what went down, and more.

Stephen Colbert Gave An Edgy Response During A Commercial Answer After A Fan Questioned What He'd Ask Donald Trump

Stephen Colbert and the other crop of late show hosts don't have it easy. They are tasked with a brutal schedule and, in addition, the hosts need to make things entertaining for both the fans at home and those in the live audience at the theater or studio. Fans come from all around the world to watch their favorite late show hosts, and typically, might even get a chance to ask their favorite late night hero a question.

That took place with a college student a few years ago. During the break, Stephen Colbert loves to interact with his live audience in New York City. Colbert has received positive reviews for his live tapings. He certainly gave the fans a moment they won't ever forget in this particular instance.

The fan asks, "My question is, if you had Donald Trump on your show tonight, what would you ask him?"

A wise question from a young college student knowing she'd get quite the reaction out of Colbert. The question was met with a groan from the audience, while Colbert himself hilariously seemed disappointed.

"Well, we're not broadcasting right now. So I'd say, what does Vladimir Putin's **** taste like."

The crowd erupted after Colbert made the joke, while the band also started playing, leading to Colbert breaking out in a dance. "That's a fine joke," he continued. "Don't tell your grandchildren." Fans can relive the rare moment below.

Donald Trump's particular tie for his Stephen Colbert interview was purposely worn, according to a former governor.

It wasn't the only time Colbert's joke about Donald Trump caused a stir. In 2017, fans were asking for Colbert to be fired after he made a joke about Trump and Putin's relationship.

He said, "You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign language gorilla that got hit in the head. In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–- holster.”

Stephen Colbert's Upcoming Late Show Guests:

50 Cent

Jack Lowden

Stephen Curry

Mark Kelly

Ketanji Brown Jackson

#FireColbert trended that night and although CBS allegedly "looked into it," nothing came about and Colbert continued on. Stephen didn't issue an apology either. Though he did show sympathy for the country after the attempted Donald Trump assassination. Still, don't expect the host to invite Trump back to the show at any point. And he isn't alone among the current crop of late show hosts.

Stephen Colbert's current Late Show contract expires in 2026.

Both Trump and Colbert have been critical of one another since the interview. Trump called Colbert a "no-talent guy," while The Late Show host roasted Donald for his interview conduct, and how his guest refused to make eye contact.

“He didn’t even make eye contact — he sat there like a bad school boy being lectured. I did once. I wouldn't want to anymore," Colbert said. "He was actually kind of disappointing. He played 'the reasonable man.' He's always kinda in persona mode. Sometimes he plays, like, the 'rallying populist' and other times he plays the 'reasonable man."

Jimmy Fallon was criticized by David Letterman for giving Donald Trump a free pass during their interview and avoiding hard-hitting questions.

Colbert clearly isn't alone as both Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have also blasted Donald Trump repeatedly in the past. We can also add Seth Meyers to that list as well. The Late Night host also made it clear, he won't have Trump on under any circumstances.

Meyers continues, "Trump's vague innuendo is no accident. This is a strategy he uses to try to appeal to the outer fringes while also avoiding accountability. To be fair, he wasn't coming on anyway," Meyers jokingly concluded. "He had no interest in being here."

As for Trump's response in return, the former President revealed Meyers was desperate to have him on, but decided to decline given Meyers' horrible ratings.

Seth Meyers has a net worth of $25 million.

"[Meyers] has begged me to do the show for the last two years," the statement read. "I have told him emphatically 'no,' I only like doing shows with good ratings, which as everybody knows, I only make better (by a lot)."

It appears as though Trump's days on late night TV are done with, unless something drastic changes in the next years.
