Sure, Stephen Colbert is generally known for his comedy but on the flip side, the late night show host also has a deeper and emotional side. We've seen examples of that in the past, like Colbert talking about his mom on The View, or Anderson Cooper breaking down discussing the loss of his father with Colbert, something both can relate to.

In the following, we're going to take a different approach, taking a closer look Colbert's interview with Dua Lipa.

Although Dua Lipa seemed nervous during a certain moment, Colbert was an absolute pro in making the interview flow. Let's take a look at how it went down, and how Dua Lipa herself was able to handle the moment with class.

Yet to enter her 30s, Dua Lipa is enjoying remarkable success, already at a net worth of $35 million. However, despite all the fame and fortune, Dua Lipa has struggled with insecurities like the rest of us. During her chat with Teen Vogue, the artist revealed that she had several bouts with anxiety in the past.

“I would get anxiety,” Dua Lipa revealed about running her own Instagram account. “And I was like, ‘This shouldn’t be the way that I’m experiencing this once-in-a-lifetime experience.’ It was messing with my confidence. I’d be super-nervous, wondering what everyone’s gonna say.”

From her first record to appearance at the Grammys, Dua Lipa revealed this feeling never went away.

"I experienced a s*** tonne [of bullying] at the end of my first record, and it was definitely something that gave me anxiety and made me upset and made me feel like I wasn’t good enough and made me feel like, maybe I’m not meant to be here and on the stage."

"Even after the Grammys, some people were like, ‘Well, she doesn’t deserve it. There were so many things, especially when you start out, like a video of me dancing and they’re like, ‘Ah well, she has no stage presence’ – but they’d never been to one of my shows, they’d never seen me perform."

Despite the fears and anxieties, the artist always challenged herself and was successful because of it. She also took on memorable interviews in the past, perhaps one of her best took place alongside Stephen Colbert.

Dua Lipa Needed An Extra Couple Of Seconds To Ask Stephen Colbert A Question, And The Host Handled It Perfectly

During Dua Lipa's interview alongside Stephen Colbert, the host decides to have some fun using a question which clearly wasn't part of the pre-interview. In the moment, Dua Lipa is discussing the fact that she'd rather interview someone than get asked questions. Colbert puts Dua Lipa on the spot and asks, "is there anything you'd like to ask me?"

Clearly, the guest wasn't expecting this type of question, and she needed a couple of extra seconds. Colbert wisely deflects the attention off of her, and uses the audience instead. It was a wise tactic and one fans noticed. Among the most liked comment on the clip was a fan pointing out the moment.

"I love that at 3:20, Stephen redirect the attention a little bit to the audience, giving Dua applause etc, because he's sensing that his guest needs a bit more time to compose her thoughts. It helped Dua Lipa to relax and start being the interviewer. It's a subtle yet highly useful skill that Stephen has, and I really admire that moment."

The moment takes place at 2:45, while Colbert uses the audience at the 3:20 mark.

She took an extra moment to reflect and once she did, Dua Lipa was able to ask Stephen Colbert a fantastic question about his faith and comedy. “I think something that your viewers really connect with in your comedy and your hosting skills, especially in the past few years, is how open and honest and authentic you are about the role your faith plays in your life,” Lipa tells Colbert. “(Do) your faith and your comedy ever overlap, and does one ever win out?”

Colbert impressed with the question responds, “Ultimately, us all being mortal, the faith will win out in the end. But I certainly hope when I get to heaven, Jesus has a sense of humor.”

He would go on to compare the film Belfast to his faith and comedy. "('Belfast' is) funny and it’s sad, and it’s funny about being sad, in the same way that sadness is like a little bit of an emotional death, but not a defeat if you can find a way to laugh about it,” Colbert said.

“Because that laughter keeps you from having fear of it, and fear is the thing that keeps you from turning to evil devices to save you from the sadness.”

A great moment shared between the two and one that proved Dua Lipa's theory that she would rather be the one asking questions.
