During his time on The Late Show, fans have seen several different sides of Stephen Colbert. He was fighting back tears during an emotional segment. On the flip side, he was fighting back puke and heat during his time with Sean Evans.

In the following, we're going to take a look back at Colbert's wings gauntlet with Evans on The Late Show. Although fans had a blast with the outcome, Colbert was struggling. That was evident on TV, though fans claim it was worse in-person. We'll take a look at how it all went down, and another painful reason Colbert once canceled The Late Show.

We're going to conclude by taking a look at Conan O'Brien's recent Hot Ones appearance, and how he managed to flip the show in a way fans had never seen before.

A Fan Admitted Stephen Colbert Was In Legit Pain During His Hot Ones Segment With Sean Evans

We turn back the clock to six years ago. At this point, Hot Ones was trending upwards, while Colbert was also establishing his name on late night programming. The match between the two ended up being the perfect fit, as fans were entertained by the segment. However, it became obvious that the sauces weren't exactly mild. Colbert struggled, and that especially held true when Da Bomb came into play.

Things started off on the right track for Colbert, as he easily handled the Valentina Black Label, while calmly discussing the differences between Chicago and New York Style pizza. However, when Da Bomb entered, Colbert's calmness vanished.

He tells Evans, "We know right around, that's not fooling around. This moment I have in my mouth right now, is what I was afraid of at the beginning of this. God dammit."

Despite the struggles, Colbert gets an ovation from the crowd. He then tries milk and every other possibility to lessen the heat from the Da Bomb. The moment was truly hilarious, but poor Colbert definitely felt it.

Fans had a lot to say looking back. One YouTube user revealed he was at the show, and Colbert's struggles continued beyond what was aired.

"I was at this taping. Stephen was in real pain."

Still, the consensus among fans was that the segment was a major positive for The Late Show. Sean Evans especially received praise.

  • "Even outside of his usual format, in a live studio audience, Sean still managed to play the crowd and guest perfectly. Went with the hype and crowd energy."
  • "Sean is a pro. He knows when an interviewee’s reaction is sometimes better than finishing asking his question. Hence - Stephen’s Lord of the Rings comment - Sean took that moment, bottled it up, and threw out his question all together. Next hot sauce!"
  • "Sean is legitimately one of the best interviewers today. He is so well researched and knows how to get great content out of his guests."

Although fans want to see Colbert in a full interview with Evans, we assume he won't be doing so on Hot Ones after getting a taste of some of the worst sauces. The likelihood of him doing it again is slim...

Conan O'Brien Took Things To The Next Level During His Hot Ones Interview Alongside Stephen Colbert

Speaking of late night hosts taking on the wings of death, we turn to Conan O'Brien. Even six years ago, fans were hoping to see Conan on Hot Ones. A fan wrote on Colbert's segment with Evans, "They need to do this with Conan lol He’d go off the wall." That comment registered over 6K likes and six years later, it came true!

The outcome was better than anyone could've expected, as Conan literally went off the walls. It is regarded as the greatest Hot Ones interview ever. Though fans were wondering how he felt and his symptoms after the Hot Ones appearance.

Of course, Conan made a joke about it.

“I had a bunch of friends who saw my name all over Twitter and the first assumption is, ‘He’s dead,'. I did have people say, ‘Oh my God, I thought, “Finally!'”

Conan went on to reveal that there wasn't any set plan entering the show.

  • “If I think something will be funny, I’ll do it and deal with it later,” he said, before detailing exactly what it was like dealing with the result of the spice intake."
  • “I was aware of the show, obviously it’s very successful show,” he said. “I went in thinking, whatever happens, I just have to eat all the wings, and just go for it and make a fool of myself. I kind of had that plan in mind, but didn’t know much beyond that.”

In just one month, the interview has over 10 million views and that number will only increase in the years to come. Well done, Conan.

Stephen Colbert Had To Cancel The Late Show In 2023 For Another Painful Reason

Throughout his run on The Late Show, rarely has Stephen Colbert canceled an episode due to an illness. However, in 2023, Colbert canceled the Late Show for one week due to a ruptured appendix.

Colbert wrote on Threads, “Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” the post reads. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”

Colbert updated his fans once he returned after a three-week hiatus.

“It is so lovely to see all of you,” Colbert began. “The last time I was sitting at this desk, which was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I was in a heap of trouble. I was not aware of the amount of trouble I was in.”

“I didn’t know what was going on. I thought I might have caught something from Dave’s beard,” he joked. “I woke up the next morning just in abdominal agony, and I figured the pain would go away.”

Colbert added that the pain was unlike anything he ever experienced.

  • “The pain was manageable. It only hurt when I moved — and when I didn’t,” he said.
  • “I held it together for two monologues and two-second acts and then a long interview with Bradley Cooper, because there is no pain when you’re lost in those baby blues. But here’s the thing: the moment I was not prepared for — and I want to start off by saying I love this man — was the cooking segment I did with José Andrés. At the end of it, he spontaneously grabbed me to dance with him afterward.”

Thankfully, Colbert was able to recover.
