Steven Spielberg Agreed To A Rare Interview With Stephen Colbert, His First On Late Night

In terms of the biggest names in the industry, it is hard to compete with Steven Spielberg. His resume is the stuff of dreams for aspiring directors and writers. Given all that success, fans would assume he had appeared alongside the likes of David Letterman, or Johnny Carson in the past, but oddly enough, that hasn't been the case. Spielberg is very selective when it comes to his interviews. For that reason, taking a seat alongside Stephen Colbert to discuss his film at the time, The Fabelmans, was quite the treat for fans. Of course, the 2022 interview was extra special as Colbert personally visited Spielberg for their extended chat.

The Fabelmans was another critical success for Steven Spielberg, generating a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not only did Steven talks about about his film, but he also railed against Antisemitism. He was asked about the rise of Antisemitism in the US, and around the world. Spielberg didn't shy away in his response.

“I find it very, very surprising,” Spielberg responded.

He continues, “Antisemitism has always been there, it’s either been just around the corner and slightly out of sight but always lurking, or it has been much more overt like in Germany in the ’30s. But not since Germany in the ’30s have I witnessed antisemitism no longer lurking, but standing proud with hands on hips like Hitler and Mussolini, kind of daring us to defy it. I’ve never experienced this in my entire life, especially in this country.”

Credit to Spielberg, who was hopeful that change could take place.

“To quote Anne Frank, I think she’s right when she said that most people are good,” Spielberg said. “And I think essentially at our core, there is goodness and there is empathy.”

In the special interview, Spielberg also discussed not looking back, despite his extensive resume. The interview is definitely worth the watch for those that missed out. Colbert was also on his game.

"Warm, kind, and down to earth" were some of the words used to describe Steve Spielberg following his interview with Stephen Colbert. Among the thousands of comments, this one was among the most liked, "Never watched a Spielberg interview so I was surprised by how warm, kind, and thoughtful he was. Very down to earth despite being arguably the most successful and one of the most talented directors ever."

The reception was just as positive from other fans. They wrote on YouTube:

  • "Drew Barrymore adores him, and on a recent episode of her show, told stories of how kind and protective he was of her during the filming of ET. That was so nice to hear, as many child actors have not been treated so well. At 6 years old, she thought ET was real."
  • "The last time I saw Spielberg do an interview was with Barbara Walters - the Oscar special the year Schindler's List won. He was lovely then too."
  • "Ngl, he is a timeless filmmaker and probably the best ever in my opinion. Like classic after classic, versatile with many many genres, knows how to block and work the camera so bloody well, incredible set pieces, gorgeous visuals. I could watch him direct anything."

Steven Spielberg also took on a brief interview remotely with Drew Barrymore.

He tells Colbert, “I don’t look back that often, but every once in awhile I’ll see a movie with my kids because I want to accompany my kids when they see ‘ET’ for the first time,” said Spielberg. “I don’t want them to see ‘ET’ without dad sitting there, especially the scary parts at the beginning.”

He continues, "For the most part, ‘ET’ is a pretty perfect movie,” Spielberg said. “It’s one of the few movies I’ve made that I can actually look back and look at it again and again. It’s only a handful of movies that I’ve watched more than once, but not a lot.”
