Stephen Colbert is known for his witty humor. However, fans have also gotten the chance to see the different side of Stephen Colbert. That was on full display during his interview alongside Anderson Cooper. Colbert and Cooper got emotional discussing their loses in life, particularly given that both had lost their parents at a young age. Colbert shared a side of himself fans rarely get to see, and the same held true on The View.
In the following, we're going to take a look back at Colbert's experience on The View, and why he decided to jokingly walk off the set. In addition, we're going to reveal the emotional topic that was brought up, and how it completely shifted the direction of his discussion with the women of The View.
Stephen Colbert Trolled The Women On The View By Walking Out Similar To The Bill O'Reilly Interview
Since it was a hot topic at the time, Stephen Colbert brought up the Bill O'Reilly interview during his time on The View. Colbert tried to downplay the situation at the start, mentioning that he sided with the women of The View. He jokingly said, “Well, because I’m on your show, I agree with Whoopi. I think there should be mosques everywhere. I think this would make a good mosque.”
Colbert continued on to defend O'Reilly surprisingly, stating that he was talking based on emotions and not actual facts. “Bill was not talking about what the facts were, Bill was talking about what felt right. It feels wrong. That’s what my rally is about. It feels wrong.'” It was at that point in which Colbert jokingly got up and left the interview.
Of course, Colbert did return and once he came back, the interview took a major turn, especially in terms of the tone. Colbert discussed his mother, and the impact she had on his life. Colbert grew with a huge family of brothers and sisters, while facing the loss of his father at a young age, along with his brothers. It only makes sense that subject was an emotional one for Colbert.
Stephen Colbert Got Serious And Emotional Discussing His Mother
The interview takes a turn after Walters brings up Colbert's mom, who took care of nine kids. When asked how she did it, Colbert was clearly emotional with his response.
"She had very strong faith. She taught us to still love life and not be bitter. And to realize that everyone suffers. And strangely enough, you have to be grateful for pain."
The interview moment went viral, with a near 6 million views on YouTube.
Colbert's mom sadly passed away at the age of 92 in 2013. The Late Show host issued a touching tribute.
“I know it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long,” he said. “But the fact that my mother was 92 does not diminish it; it only magnifies the enormity of the room whose door has now quietly shut.”
“When you watch the show, if you like this show, that’s because of everybody who works here, and I’m lucky to be one of them,” said Colbert. “But when you watch the show and you also like me, that’s because of my mom.”
A touching tribute to say the least. Colbert's mom had a major impact on his life.
Fans Praised Stephen Colbert For His Interview With The View
Fans had lots of thoughts following Stephen Colbert's interview on The View. For the most part, fans praised Colbert for involvement on the show. Some even made mention that Colbert had to change directions in terms of where the interview was going.
The fan writes, "He is such a sweet man. He realized that there was no hope for having an interesting and witty conversation with that group, so he dropped his normal act, and proceeded to calmly and politely respond to their shallow questions. I can't imagine dealing with these situations with as much grace and class."
Another fan praised Colbert for how graceful he was throughout the interview. "Steven Colbert very gracefully handles this interview (if that is what happened on the view). He truly pays homage to his mother and the entire Colbert family in his actions, response, and the way he conducts his himself in this clip. That is the real content here. Massive respect for him as an individual, the filter he has presented through mainstream media to separate the intellectually absent from the perceptive in everyday life pretty much, and the accomplishments he has achieved in his professional career."
Colbert clearly showed a different layer of himself during the interview, one outside of comedy. Fans loved to see this side of the host and the class he was able to maintain throughout the interview.
