Fans can count on Stevie Nicks to be very honest, and that has held true, even when controversy struck behind the scenes with Fleetwood Mac. She's always very honest with other matters, rejecting the potential of Lindsay Lohan portraying her in a biopic... In the following, however, we're going to switch gears and take a closer look at a reveal made by Nicks during her time alongside David Letterman. Nicks spoke about her experience alongside Bill Clinton, and although the performance was a memorable one, Stevie believes the same did not hold true for the former President. We'll take a look back at what went on during their interaction, and how Nicks continued to show her support for the Clintons years after that very performance.
Bill Clinton Was A Fan Of Fleetwood Mac And Honored Christine McVie Following Her Passing
In Bill Clinton's view, Fleetwood Mac played a major role in his Presidential campaign back in 1992. Clinton believes the performance of 'Don't Stop' helped to capture what the future was going to look like for the US. Christine McVie played a major role in getting the song out. Following her passing in 2022, Clinton took to Twitter, showing his appreciation for the late artist.
He wrote, "I’m saddened by the passing of Christine McVie. “Don’t Stop” was my ’92 campaign theme song - it perfectly captured the mood of a nation eager for better days. I’m grateful to Christine & Fleetwood Mac for entrusting us with such a meaningful song. I will miss her."
Although that was a memorable moment for Clinton, Stevie Nicks believes that didn't hold true for a different performance, and one that turned out to be one of the most memorable from Fleetwood Mac.
Stevie Nicks Told David Letterman That Bill Clinton Was Nervous And Felt Awkward On-Stage During Their Performance Of Don't Stop
The performance in question takes place at the Inagural Ball back in January of 1993. During her time alongside David Letterman, Stevie Nicks was asked about her time alongside Clinton. Nicks revealed she didn't spend much time with the President, given that he was swept off the stage following the performance.
Nicks would go on to reveal that Clinton looked very nervous on stage, and things were made worse when she handed the former President a defected tambourine. At that point, Nicks couldn't even assist Clinton given that she was into the performance.
Nonetheless, despite the minor hiccup, Fleetwood Mac received a lot of love for the performance, and it became iconic in its own right.
A fan writes on YouTube, "One of the greatest live television performances in history. Absolutely phenomenal."
"You can tell the band was so overcome with emotion and awe for being chosen for such a gala event. I think it's awesome, and one of my favorite songs by far," another fan comments.
As it turns out, the moment didn't sour Nicks' relationship with the Clintons as years later, she was showing support for Hillary during her Presidential run.
Stevie Nicks Extended Her Support Of The Clintons When Hillary Ran For President
Back in 2016, Stevie Nicks sat down alongside Us Magazine, answering questions about her career, and politics. Among the questions included who she was supporting at the time. Nicks made it clear that her vote and support was with Hillary Clinton.
She said in the 2016 interview, "My heart is with Hillary Clinton. I feel that the world is in a really dangerous place and it scares me. It’s the first time I can ever remember being scared that the United States might mess up and something terrible will happen to us. I don’t like that feeling and I watch the news every day because of it."
Nicks continues on, "It’s going to be hard to fix all of these problems that seem absolutely unfixable to me. But I’m very proud that a woman, has finally been chosen as a candidate for the president of the United States, because I always felt women should be treated like first-class citizens. We are just as a good as men are — and maybe better and smarter."
Clearly, the final verdict was not what Nicks wanted. Who knows, maybe if Hillary won there would've been another memorable performance by the group.
