Taylor Swifthas been spoiling her fans with new music lately, but a number of people on the internet have started to find it "predictable". Insiders have previously claimed that the "no complaints" Cats star is "jealous" of her younger female peers, including Billie Eilish, with whom Swift is allegedly feuding after simultaneous album releases that ruined the Bad Guy hitmaker's chance at no. 1 on the albums chart.
So on July 8, an X (formerly Twitter) user knew Swift would release new music after Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan were the only women to top the Billboard Hot 100 at that time. Like clockwork, the singer — who turned down the Super Bowl halftime show — dropped an acoustic version of Fortnight, just hours after the ominous post. Here's a brief history of Swift's "greedy" tactics.
Someone Predicted Taylor Swift's Music Release After Sabrina Carpenter And Chappell Roan Topped Hot 100 Without Her
On July 8, Niles Abston (@NILES100) — a "stand up comedian but a movie star on the side" — predicted that Swift would release new music after Pop Base reported that the only women in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 were Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. As seen in the photo, Abston's post was published at 4:12 PM (EDT).
At 12:07 AM on July 9, Pop Base announced on X that "Taylor Swift has released the acoustic version of 'Fortnight' featuring Post Malone."
Abston quoted the post, saying "yup," alongside a screenshot of his forecast. Fans quickly weighed in on the suspicious coincidence. "It's getting too predictable [at this point] 😭 like we are [definitely] seeing a pattern," one replied. Another netizen said, "We're so tired of that woman she doesn't want to let others [to] shine."
One joked, "The tortured poets dead writers department of heartbreak extended double deluxe, limited edition acoustic vinyl on the way as we speak..."
Others went on to call Swift "calculated". A commenter noted that "every week she releases a different version, every other week she is blocking someone, this is too calculated and pathetic at this point." Responding to his followers, Abston just wrote that he "saw it coming from a mile away."
Taylor Swift's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department is her biggest Billboard debut as of this writing. It sold 1.4 million copies on its first day and spent 12 consecutive weeks at no. 1 on the Hot 100.
Taylor Swift Was Called "Greedy" For Releasing Music At The Same Time As Billie Eilish And Charli XCX
In May, online critics called Swift "greedy" and "desperate" after putting out three new editions of The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), a day before Eilish's, Hit Me Hard and Soft (HMHS) came out on the 17th. The latter had already announced her album's release date on April 8. TTPD first launched on April 19. Fans refused to believe it was just a coincidence.
On the day Eilish's album came out, a fan on X shared a clip of the songstress where she said she was waiting for Ariana Grande to release her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, before announcing the release date of HMHS. Music stans immediately linked it to Swift's "patterns" of competitively dropping new music around the same time as other female pop stars.
The fan wrote in the caption: "love how billie said she'd wait till ariana released eternal sunshine to release her album & here's taylor mass releasing to block billie...mind u she just released an album with 31 tracks...just greedy 💀"
Back in March, the younger artist seemingly shaded the 14-time Grammy winner after slamming "wasteful" musicians who make "f---ing 40 different vinyl packages […] just to get you to keep buying more." Things escalated on June 7, when The Daily Mail released an exclusive report about Swift's alleged "vicious campaign" against Eilish. "Industry insiders aren't blind to the fact that Taylor is weaponizing her fans and that Billie appears to be the latest victim in that campaign," said a source close to the latter.
The insider also claimed that "whenever Taylor feels jealous of a peer's success, she does all she can to make sure her fans start vicious online campaigns to bring that person down without ever telling them to stop. And all while operating under the guise of being America's sweetheart."
Swift was also accused of pulling "jealous" moves on Charli XCX, who released her highly anticipated sixth studio album, Brat on June 7. The following day, the Love Story hitmaker released a limited number of hand-signed TTPD CDs. Responding to her announcement on X, a fan asked, "Being brave by asking why just the the [US] and [UK] and never the rest of the world," to which another user replied, "Because [she's] in a charting battle in those two countries."
Charli somehow addressed the controversy on June 15 during her Los Angeles show. "What's the next song?" she said on stage before remembering it was, Sympathy With A Knife, causing the audience to get louder. "That's interesting," said the English singer. "I just feel like artistry shines through." Fans assumed the track was about Swift, particularly because of these lines: "I don't want to share the space" and "This one girl taps my insecurities".
Here's a timeline of Swift's "desperate" music releases that coincided with the big moments of these younger female artists:
Date | Other Artists | Date | Taylor Swift's "Greedy" Releases |
April 8 | Billie Eilish announced the release date of her album, Hit Me Hard and Soft | April 19 | The Tortured Poets Department came out |
May 17 | Hit Me Hard and Soft came out | May 18 | Swift released three new editions of TTPD |
June 7 | Charli XCX released her album, Brat | June 8 | Swift announced the drop of her limited hand-signed TTPD CDs |
July 8 | Sabrina Carpenter (Espresso at #4; Please Please Please at #6)and Chappell Roan (Good Luck, Babe at #10) were the only women in the top 10 of that week's Billboard Hot 100 | July 9 | Fortnight acoustic version came out |
Taylor Swift Has Been Criticized For "Weaponizing Girlhood" And "Commodifying" Female Friendships
Aside from being accused of "weaponizing her fans," Swift has also been branded a "capitalist queen" who "weaponizes girlhood" instead of being an actual feminist. Betches' Marissa Dow started by calling out the singer for "commodifying" her famous female friendships — that Sophie Turner post-divorce link-up, the Bad Blood gang, her Victoria's Secret connection via Karlie Kloss, and her new "handy" friendship with Julia Roberts.
Dow explained: "While having an unmanageable amount of documented girlfriends isn’t inherently feminist or anti-feminist, Taylor’s bachelorette-esque commodification of picture-perfect sisterhood infiltrated the media with alarming fervor, showcasing this shiny new female friendship, which apparently hinges on holding hands while hating men or cheering them on, depending on the season."
The journalist also discussed "The Swiftie Hivemind" in which "anything Taylor says, or is rumored to have said, is as good as gospel." This is where the "fan weaponizing" comes in. "These incidents are like a virtual slumber party, where Swift reigns as the Regina George, never demanding but presumably always pleased by her loyal Gretchens and Karens coming for her latest opponent online," Dow wrote.
She went on to claim that "[Swift's] MO has conflated having a broken heart with the musical version of breaking the kneecaps of enemies who cross her. She's Al Capone and her minions are the mob. The lyrics practically write themselves." Dow argued that "failing to explore female empowerment outside of how it relates to men leaves [Swift's] version of girlhood extremely shallow." You can say her "MO" hasn't matured as Adele, whose growth we've all witnessed from 19 to 30.
A psychologist believes Taylor Swift is "likely autistic" based on her music, relationships, and "childlike quality".
