'Ted Lasso' ran rampant at the Emmy Awards, cleaning house and setting records. It is no secret any longer, the show is an incredible comedy and one that can tug at your heartstrings.
Jason Sudeikis is a major reason for the show's success. Not only can he make the fans laugh, but he can also bring the audience to tears, like with that epic dart scene.
Roy Kent aka Brett Goldstein turned into the breakout star of the show, playing the role of Roy Kent to perfection... and no, he isn't a CGI character.
As good as the two have been, it takes an entire cast. Not only has everyone meshed together, but the actors also have quite the net worths to show for it. Another element fans may not know, is that the cast needed an athletic background before stepping on the pitch for Lasso's team.
Jason Sudeikis Was Pushed Into The Role Of 'Ted Lasso' By His Ex-Wife
Oh, how things could've turned out to be different for Jason Sudeikis. In truth, 'Ted Lasso' would never be the same without him. The show's concept would actually start off as a commercial lasting only a few minutes.
Later, a concept was made about an entire show. Jason was initially skeptical, though his ex Olivia Wilde would push him towards the role.
''So, one day in 2015, my [then] partner [Olivia Wilde] came up to me one day and said, 'You know, you should do Ted Lasso as a show,' and I said, 'I don’t know,' but then after marinating on it, I thought maybe this could happen."
"Olivia was like, 'Jason, you are doing this show. You’re going to London, you’re going to make this with your friends, and that’s all there is to it.'"
Wilde was right, as he was made for the role and the show would enjoy massive success. Jason would set records at the Emmy's for nominations, proving that the show is among the top today.
A big part of the success has to do with the casting, which also turned out to be a big task.
The Casting Director Made Sure That The Actors In 'Ted Lasso' Had Soccer Experience And An Athletic Background
When the boys are playing a game or kicking the ball around, do they actually know how to play? This is a question 'Ted Lasso' fans have been asking, and the answer is, yes.
A requirement for the role was soccer and athletic skills. Nobody did this better than Cristo Fernandez, who actually played soccer professionally before injuries took over his career.
"It sounds crazy already, but it's been a journey. Football has been my passion my whole life and as you said, I used to practice it professionally. Here back home in Guadalajara, Mexico, where I'm from, I played not the top level, like first edition, but I played professionally in the third and second division. That was my thing. Football was my passion since I was a little kid, until now," the actor stated with Screen Times.
Casting director Theo Park would confirm alongside Indie Wire that it was imperative that the cast have the basic set of skills required to play.
"It was vital that all the team really could play football, so it was absolutely part of their audition process,” explained Park. “They had to do normal scenes acting, and then they had to show us their football skills on tape as well.”
Everyone had a unique journey on the show, and that would also include Emmy Award winner Brett Goldstein.
Brett Goldstein Started Off On The Show As A Writer But Would Later Transform Into Roy
Without a doubt, Roy Kent, aka Brett Goldstein is the breakout star of 'Ted Lasso'. He reached the pinnacle of his career most recently, taking home the honors of Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy at the Emmy Awards.
The actor was made for the role and he realized that early on. However, as he revealed with Collider, that wasn't always the case as at the start, he was just a writer for the show.
“I was a writer, and we were like, five episodes into writing [the show], and I started to think, ‘I think I’m Roy."
"We wrote in LA, and I flew back to London, and when I landed, there was an email saying, ‘You know what? We can’t be bothered to keep looking. That’ll do."
We can safely say that every casting decision was the correct one, as everyone meshed together incredibly well. In addition, Brett's father is a huge soccer fan, as he revealed on Jimmy Kimmel, making his character that much more authentic.
