Yes, taking on a role with the MCU can be career-changing, however, it also comes with a lot of stress. Just ask Brie Larson and her role as 'Captain Marvel.' The training itself for the film was an adventure on its own, one that would lead to lots of tears in the gym... Adding to that, Larson actually turned down the offer multiple times, given that the project was too much for her to handle.
Thankfully, Larson changed her mind, "I remember getting a call when I was shooting [Kong: Skull Island] ... and they said Marvel is interested in you playing Captain Marvel," recalls Larson in the video (below). "I was like, 'I can't do that. I have too much anxiety. That's too much for me. I don't think I can handle that.'"
She took the role and it was a huge success. However, along the way, she faced a lot of heat and according to the world of social media, she might be the most disliked person in the Marvel Universe. We'll look at a specific incident to take place that hurt her cause along with how she feels about the hate in general.
She Doesn't Have Time For The Haters
Comic fans don't shy away from their true opinions and we can say the same for Brie Larson, who is known for doing the same. When asked how she handles the heat, Larson simply stated that she doesn't focus on it, to begin with. All she cares about is the task at hand, "Oh, I didn't even know," Larson said. "I don't have time for it, you know? The things that I have extra time to really look at are, like: Am I eating healthy food? Am I drinking water? Am I meditating? Have I called my mom today?"
As for this plethora of internet rumors, once again Larson doesn't seem to care. In her own words, she doesn't need the internet to tell who she is, a very valid point, "I've never Googled myself," answering a question she says many journalists have posed to her, particularly after the Captain Marvel release. "I have genuinely never needed to look at the internet to explain to me who I am. I'm extremely committed to that in my day-to-day life!"
Following her time with 'Kong', Larson wisely took a meeting with Marvel and it changed her entire perception of the role. She was moved by what they were trying to accomplish. From that point on, as they say, the rest is history, "I was very moved by what they were trying to achieve, [and] what they were talking about. It felt very progressive," Larson states, thinking back to that early stage in the casting process. "I was very surprised by that, by the way they were talking about feminism [and] the way they were handling it. There were all female writers, [a] female director, [and it was] going to have as many female voices in this as possible."
At times, Larson's voice might be a little too much for some to handle. That was the case during her promotional work while being in an interview alongside Chris Hemsworth. An answer to a certain question rubbed lots of fans the wrong way and it is said that the studio wasn't thrilled either.
Stunt Woman
Ah yes, how a simple 10-second clip can anger millions. After hearing Hemsworth say that he does his own stunts, Larson got a little agitated stating that she always did her own stunts as well, given that she figured this was the norm.
It came out in kind of an arrogant way and when Chris Hemsworth tried to lighten the mood by calling her Tom Cruise, she once again went in defense mode, "No, I’ll be the first me, not the next Tom Cruise. Thank you very much.”
Ultimately, fans weren't all that pleased with Brie's seriousness regarding the question.
According to Bounding Into Comics, those behind the scenes really weren't happy with Larson becoming an MCU face, "a number of the Avengers cast actors “are unhappy with Brie Larson being the face of the MCU going forward.”
Reddit fans were also angered and all over the situation, asking for Larson to be removed from the equation moving forward.
Needless to say, despite everything, Larson was kept on and it didn't seem to mess with her one bit.
