On the first day of the 2020s, TLC aired the premiere episode of 1000-lb Sisters for the very first time. For a lot of viewers who tuned into the show’s premiere on January 1st of 2020, it seemed like Amy and Tammy Slaton went from being completely anonymous to being famous that day.

While there is no doubt that 1000-lb Sisters introduced millions of fans to the Slaton sisters for the first time, the fact is that Tammy and Amy were already building a fanbase. After all, Amy Slaton launched a YouTube channel in 2011 which managed to accumulate momentum.

On the YouTube channel that is named Amy Slaton-Halterman as of this writing, both of the Slaton sisters initially appeared in a series of lighthearted videos.

After enjoying some success early on, Amy Slaton’s YouTube channel went to a whole new level when the Slaton sisters took part in the “Chubby Bunny Challenge”. In their video, both of the Slaton sisters stuffed their mouths with marshmallows and tried to say “chubby bunny” which is very difficult to enunciate with a full mouth.

Thanks to the Slaton Sisters both cracking up as they tried to speak with their mouths full of marshmallows, their video was a lot of fun to watch. As a result, the sisters’ “Chubby Bunny Challenge” video was so successful that it has 2.5 million views as of this writing.

How The Slaton Sisters’ YouTube Success Led To 1000-lb Sisters

In the past, Amy Slaton-Halterman has revealed that her popular YouTube channel led directly to TLC’s decision to work with the Slaton sisters. “We started YouTube before we started the show. Our followers from YouTube contacted TLC.”

During the same interview in which Amy Slaton-Halterman explained that TLC gained interest in the Slaton sisters due to YouTube, she also revealed that the network’s plans were less ambitious. Instead of having their own show, TLC originally wanted the Slaton sisters to join the cast of another series.

According to Amy Slaton-Halterman, the Slaton sisters were originally going to join the cast of the show Family by the Ton. “At first, we were going to be on that show.” However, once TLC producers watched more of the Slaton sisters’ YouTube videos, they became convinced the siblings could star in their own show.

“Then TLC and all the producers and everybody at TLC were watching our YouTube videos and they loved how Amy and I interact with each other, you know, how we joke around.”

“How real we are with each other. We tell each other how it is, this and that, and we are not afraid to be ourselves and we ended up with our own show. For the longest time, we didn’t even have a name for our show, but now we do.”

Unsurprisingly, it is clear that having their own show hasn’t fixed everything for the Slaton sisters since they still have health scares and strife in their personal lives. Despite that, launching the show 1000-lb Sisters certainly appears to have worked out great for everyone involved.
