During The Pitt's first season, the TV show was recognized by many people as the greatest medical drama ever produced. There are many reasons why The Pitt deserves accolades like that, including the fact that the show has featured extremely meaningful scenes and revealing lines of dialogue. Since The Pitt is so great, fans are excited about the show's future, including about deleted storylines that could return and a "possible" spin-off.

Thanks to how invested fans are in The Pitt, they want to know about the show's deleted scenes and cast members who are nepo babies. Similarly, many The Pitt viewers would be fascinated to learn that Katherine LaNasa's performance on the show was informed by a horrible tragedy she once suffered.

How Katherine LaNasa's Personal Tragedies Inspired Her The Pitt Performance

From the moment that The Pitt was announced, the show's promotion has revolved around its main star, Noah Wyle. Given that Noah rose to fame starring in the show ER, it makes sense for the team behind The Pitt using his celebrity status to promote the show.

However, when fans watch The Pitt, there is no doubt that one of the show's highlights is Katherine LaNasa's performance as charge nurse Dana Evans. Arguably the heart and soul of The Pitt's fictional emergency department, Dana exudes strength, passion, and compassion.

In order to make Dana as emotionally powerful as she comes across, Katherine had to give a marvelous performance as the character. With that in mind, it worth learning that Katherine's fantastic portrayal of Dana was inspired by a real-life tragedy she went through.

In June 2025, Katherine spoke to Variety about her The Pitt role for a profile focused on the show's female leads.

The Pitt Season 2 will feature several new actors, including an actor who rose to fame thanks to Breaking Bad.

In June 2025, it was revealed that another difficult part of Katherine's personal past inspired her stellar The Pitt performance.

In June 2025, Katherine LaNasa was interviewed by Yahoo! Life about The Pitt and revealed how freeing she found starring in the show. "I have to tell you: To play a part like Dana and to wear no makeup, it was really very freeing. It's also really freeing working for a mostly female writing crew. Feeling like I don't have to live up to that ridiculous, feminine, sexual ideal has freed up my acting. And I think it's why the acting's good on the show. Women can feel like they can just relax into being themselves."

Katherine wrote a piece for Women's Health about her personal history in which she revealed the fact that she'd battled breast cancer a couple of years earlier.

"In February 2023, I was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer."

In the remainder of Katherine's incredibly powerful piece, she expressed several sentiments about what makes her the perfect person to portray The Pitt's Dana. For example, Katherine wrote about finding the strength to not feel sorry for herself when she reflected on her cancer diagnosis. "It hit me like a ton of bricks, but I was so fortunate that my very first thought was, why not me? rather than why me? It happens to so many people, you know, and coming from that why not me? perspective opened the door to staying positive throughout my treatment."

As a part of the same Women's Health piece, Katherine wrote about how her interactions with nurses during her cancer battle informed her The Pitt performance.

"My performance as the steadfast eyes and ears of the ER was also informed by my own health struggle and the calm, compassionate nurses I met during treatment."

As a part of the same paragraph, Katherine wrote about identifying with her The Pitt character. "Playing nurse Dana Evans on the Max medical drama The Pitt comes naturally to me—we're a lot alike. We're both part-competent-working-woman-who suffers-no-fools and part-nurturing-den-mother."

The Pitt’s Taylor Dearden Explained How Her Character Would Feel About The Return Of Dr. Langdon

The Pitt’s Taylor Dearden has high hopes for her character's relationship with Dr. Frank Langdon.

Later in her piece for Women's Health, Katherine wrote about when she lost hope during her cancer battle and had a breakdown. Then, Katherine revealed that an Emergency Room nurse helped her through that difficult moment in her real-life. Katherine also wrote about other tender moments she shared with nurses in her personal life.

"I had been very brave during my cancer journey, all the surgery, all the radiation, all the recovery, all of that stuff. But when I felt like I wasn't going to get un-sick, I had a breakdown in triage in the ER. The ER nurse comforted me. "Listen, I get it. I get what you're going through," she said. "The first six months after cancer are really bumpy, and it's not going to stay like this."

She told me about her family member who had just gone through treatment, and how it would get better. That gesture mattered so much. It was so generous and thoughtful of her to take the time in her overwhelmingly busy day to attend to my emotions like that. I had similar experiences with nurses when both my grandmother and my ex-husband were dying."
