Kim Kardashian and Ray J's relationship has always been associated with their infamous sex tape. Through the years, they never really discussed why they broke up. Fast-forward to now and the singer claims to have a second sex tape which Kanye West allegedly retrieved in the latest episode of The Kardashians. Ray J said it didn't happen, reigniting his feud with the family yet again. But where did it really start? Here's what happened between him and Kardashian.
When Did Kim Kardashian & Ray J Start Dating?
The couple started dating in 2002 when they were both 21 years old. The reality star met the singer when she was working for his sister, Brandy. The two had an on-and-off relationship until 2007, the same year their sex tape was released. They filmed the tapes in 2002 during Kardashian's birthday celebrations. In a 2022 interview with Daily Mail, Ray J alleged that the beauty mogul leaked the sex tape herself, along with her mother Kris Jenner. "I've sat in the shadows for over 14 years allowing the Kardashians to use my name, to abuse my name, make billions of dollars over a decade-and-a-half talking about a topic I've never really spoken about," said the singer.
"I've never leaked anything. I have never leaked a sex tape in my life," he continued. "It has never been a leak. It's always been a deal and a partnership between Kris Jenner and Kim and me and we've always been partners since the beginning of this thing." However, he admitted that it was his idea to release the video. He suggested it to Kardashian after seeing how Paris Hilton's sex tape with Rick Salomon boosted her fame. He added that with the help of Jenner, the couple signed a contract with Vivid Entertainment for three videos.
"It was something we did in Cabo on a trip for her birthday and it was something extra we were doing in the hotel," said the dad-of-two. "She kept them all – she had to go find that tape [Sex Tape Cabo #1] and then present it. I never had a tape in my possession in our whole relationship. I never had a single one at my house – she had them at her house. She's always had all the tapes in a Nike shoe box under her bed. I'm sure she has bigger beds now and better boxes. That's how it all came about. Once I pitched the idea to her, just playing around a little bit, that's when she jumped on the idea, talked to her mom and it was out of my hands from there."
Why Did Kim Kardashian & Ray J Break Up?
Years after their sex tape was leaked, Ray J accused Kardashian of being unfaithful during their relationship. "We're the same kind of player. She was the female me," the rapper told Stacy and Jasmine Waltz when asked if he thinks he'd broken Kardashian's heart. "She was a player, though. You don't really know what happened. Put it like this - we were both players. We were both cheaters, you know?" Stacy wasn't buying the singer's response. She recalled the mom-of-four "crying her eyes out for" Ray J because she loved him "very much."
Ray J clarified that he also loved the reality star but that a lot of things went wrong in their relationship. "You're looking at it from outside the house, walking in and seeing her do my clothes or something," he told Stacy. "You don't know what happened earlier, later... no clue. People think a lot of things. We loved each other. Every relationship I was in, I loved the girl. It's just the moral standards and values were off. I was loving and lying."
Did Ye Really Retrieve Ray J's Second Sex Tape With Kim Kardashian?
In a recent episode of The Kardashians, West appeared to have retrieved the second sex tape Ray J was threatening to release. "He got me all of the sex tape back. He met up with Ray J at the airport and got it all back," Kardashian said during a scene where she was unpacking a suitcase with the hard drive containing all the videos.
"I know Kanye did this for me, but he also did this for my kids," the SKIMS founder said during a confessional interview. "I wanna shield them from as much as I can. And if I had the power to or if Kanye has the power to, like, that is just the most important thing to me." Ray J commented on @hollywoodunlocked's Instagram post about it, saying: "All of this is a lie smh — Can’t let them do this anymore — so untrue." West and Kardashian haven't responded.
