Hailee Steinfeld is a celebrated actress who, in the past few years, has been getting wider recognition thanks to her portrayal of Kate Bishop / Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 2021 miniseries on Disney+ of the same name. Additionally, the Academy Award-nominated actress is also the face (and the voice) of many iconic characters, including Gwen Stacey in Miles Morales' Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Emily Dickinson in Apple TV's Dickinson, and Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 2.
However, with that being said, there's still a lot to tell about the 25-year-old rising star than just being an actress. In addition to acting, Steinfeld's entertainment portfolio also expands into singing. Her Pitch Perfect 2 role was just a start of something special, as she then went on to release several international chart-topping hits throughout the years. Here's a simplified timeline of Steinfeld's singing career and what the future holds in store for the actress.
6 The Start Of Hailee Steinfeld's Music Career
Hailee Steinfeld kicked off her musical career when she secured a recurring role in the second Pitch Perfect film back in 2015. An initially nervous and utterly shy member yet talented, Steinfeld's character, Emily Junk, has evolved to leadership role by the third film in 2017. The actress herself also contributed to the second film's soundtrack album, in which she performed her rendition of Jessie J's "Flashlight." Shortly after, she secured a lucrative recording deal under Republic Records.
“The moment that we met Hailee we found her commitment to music inspiring,” said Republic Records executive vice president Charlie Walk, as noted by Billboard. “She has the vision, natural talent and, dedication to compete at the highest level. We are thrilled to be a part of her musical journey.”
5 Hailee Steinfeld Has Opened For Meghan Trainor, Charlie Puth, & More
Since then, throughout the years, Steinfeld has performed on some of the world's largest musical tours. She opened for Meghan Trainor's Unstoppable Tour to promote the latter's sophomore album, Thank You, from July until October 2016. Two years after that, she had quite a busy schedule, opening for former One Direction member Niall Horan's Flicker World Tour in London, Katy Perry's Witness: The Tour in England and Scotland, and Charlie Puth's Voicenotes Tour in the US.
4 Hailee Steinfeld's Debut EP, 'Haiz,' Was Hailed With Commercial Success
Shortly after signing the recording deal with Republic, Steinfeld went on to release her electro, dance pop-influenced debut single, "Love Myself," in August 2015. After peaking at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and debuting at number 27 on the Pop Songs chart, she scored history as the highest debut for a solo female artist on the latter in 27 years. Its follow-up EP, Haiz, was also a success story despite critical reviews upon Steinfeld's "originality."
"Toward the beginning of this whole process I knew what I wanted my sound to be, but I had such a hard time trying to articulate it," she recalled the album's creative process in a 2015 interview with Time. She credited producers and songwriters Mattman & Robin, Julia Michaels, and Justin Tranter, adding, "This is exactly what I wanted it to sound like, and I owe it so much to the four of them for being so incredibly patient with me."
3 However, Despite All That, She's Yet To Release A Full-Length Debut Album
Since then, Hailee Steinfeld went on to release a string of successful charting singles. A year after Haiz, she teamed up with Zedd and electro-duo Grey for a dreamy, flirtatious EDM-influenced song "Starving." She ended up earning her first top 10 on multiple record charts internationally. Another female empowerment single, "Most Girls," was released in the same year. She followed it up with Florida Gerogia Line-featuring "Let Me Go" a year later, but despite all that, she's still yet to release a full-length debut album. Why?
2 What Hailee Steinfeld Is Doing Instead Of Music
To put it simply, Hailee Steinfeld has been keeping herself busy with her acting career, hence she may be putting her singing projects on hold for a while. Back in 2018, she joined the star-studded cast members of Miles Morales' Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman, and is set to reprise the role for the upcoming two Accross the Spider-Verse films. She also starred in Bumblebee and joined Jeremy Renner as Kate Bishop on Marvel Studio's Hawkeye series.
1 Hailee Steinfeld's Second EP, 'Half Written Story,' Was Released In 2020
There may be another story why her singing career has been a little bumpy, though. As the first musical bodywork she'd ever put out since 2015, it's not exaggerating for her to demand her label facilitate her publishing. Shortly after releasing her second EP, Half Written Story, in 2020, she took to her Instagram to publicize it and savagely called out her record label for failing to post it on their social media handle, ironically saying, "You gonna post about it?." .
