Especially in the last few years, Ryan Reynolds has certainly had to juggle a lot of things around. For starters, he’s been hard at work on several Hollywood projects while managing his own telecom company (Mint Mobile). He also remains incredibly involved with Aviation Gin, the company that he had sold for an estimated $610 million.Dwayne Johnson. And so, when Johnson was finally set to star in his own Fast and Furious spinoff, Reynolds readily came out to do a short but memorable scene with him. To this day, however, there are fans who still wonder how it all came together.
Despite all that, Reynolds is a man who makes time for his friend, especially when the friend being referred to is fellow actor (and savvy businessman)Here’s What Ryan Reynolds Did in Hobbs And Shaw
In Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Reynolds was introduced as CIA agent Victor Locke. He appears in a diner scene where he tells Johnson’s Hobbs that a rogue MI6 agent (Vanessa Kirby) had stolen a virus known as Snowflake.
There’s a lot of hilarious banter in this scene. Not to mention, this was also the moment when fans learned that Hobbs’ middle name is Rebecca. It might have been brief, but Reynolds certainly knew how to make an impression.
As it turns out, however, Reynolds’ appearance on the film could have been longer as his character was supposed to be driving a car at one point. However, the Deadpool actor refused. “True story. I personally designed this car for @VancityReynolds to drive in @HobbsAndShaw, but he refused because he hated the white stripes,” Johnson revealed on Twitter. “I didn’t take it personal, as we’re still drinking buddies.”
How Did The Cameo Happen?
As it turns out, Reynolds agreed to appear in the film because Johnson is a close buddy. “That cameo was a favour for Dwayne,” Reynolds confirmed as much while speaking with Gentleman’s Journal. Once he agreed, the actor was pretty much up for anything.
“We had that exposition of the virus, and I called him and said, 'Hey, I have this scene, it’s stuffy exposition, plot stuff, so would you consider coming in and let’s make it fun?’” director David Leitch recalled while speaking with SYFY WIRE. “I sent him the pages and he added the special Ryan dust.”
Unbeknownst to Leitch, Reynolds happens to be a huge fan of cameos. “Here’s the thing about cameos: they’re not done that much, and I think they should be,” the actor explained. “I really believe in them.” In fact, Reynolds got so excited that one time that he got Brad Pitt to do a cameo in Deadpool 2. “I just remember thinking then, if anyone ever asks me for a cameo, there is no way in hell — unless I’m legally dead — that I will say no,” Reynolds continued. “Because I’m sure there’s some sort of film karma with cameos.”
Will Ryan Reynolds Return To Hobbs And Shaw?
The answer really depends on whether Johnson is willing to expand the world of Hobbs and Shaw on the big screen. And it seems he’s planning to do just that. While Johnson may have recently announced that he doesn’t plan to return in the future Fast and Furious films, it turns out he’s still keen on bringing Hobbs and Shaw back together.
“So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans,” Hiram Garcia, the president of Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, told Collider. “Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed. We just have specific plans for what we want to do with the Hobbs character and I think the fans are going to love it!”
Meanwhile, if it were all up to Leitch, fans would also get to see more of Locke and Hobbs in the next installment. After all, the two men have great onscreen chemistry. Of Reynolds’ character, Leitch remarked, “Hopefully we can spin [him] out into more episodes of Hobbs & Shaw.” And in case fans are wondering how soon another Hobbs and Shaw film would come out, Garcia also teased, “We’re working to deliver something very unique and fresh and we know the studio is eager for us to get into it ASAP!”
Fans Can See These Two Actors Reunite Onscreen Soon
In the meantime, fans waiting on a new Hobbs and Shaw film (and hopefully, another cameo by Reynolds) may also be excited to learn that Johnson and Reynolds are set to appear onscreen together again soon. Reynolds had joined the cast of Johnson’s Netflix movie, The Red Notice. The men are also joined by Gal Gadot. In a post, Johnson proudly revealed that The Red Notice is “the largest investment” that Netflix has ever made on a film.
The Red Notice is set to be released on November 12. Meanwhile, there have been no further announcements on a future Hobbs and Shaw installment.
