The Golden Bachelor and The Golden Bachelorette have become a successful part of "Bachelor Nation" (shows under The Bachelor umbrella). Like any good reality TV show, there are plenty of villains for audiences to love to hate.
The dating show debuted in 2023 and follows the same principles as The Bachelor, only with a more mature cast. The adorable series proved that just because they are seniors looking for love, doesn't mean they are more emotionally mature, calmer, or don't come with their own baggage.
Gil Ramirez Had A Restraining Order Against Him
Gil Ramirez's time winning over Joan Vassos' affection on The Golden Bachelorette was minimized after it was revealed that his ex had filed a restraining order against him.
The reality TV show contestant allegedly has a history of stalking, according to the request for a restraining order obtained by PEOPLE. Ramirez's ex-girlfriend was granted a temporary restraining order against him just a few days before the production of the first series of The Golden Bachelorette.
A source close to the show told EW that when the production team behind The Golden Bachelorette heard about the restaining order, they "further edited his already limited screen time and minimized him in promotional assets moving forward."
- The order happened after they checked his background, so it wasn't flagged when he was hired.
Gil Ramirez's ex-girlfriend was granted a restraining order for alleged emotional harassment. The paperwork claims he tried to make contact with her friends and family, despite being told not to. The court records stated, “25 attempts daily via phone, texts, video. Although lives an hour away — showed up at places I frequent to confront me on a daily basis.”
The restraining order was later dropped after a delayed July hearing.
These Contestants' Past Were Full of Red Flags
Season 1 front-runner of The Golden Bachelorette, Guy Gansert made the audience wary when they learned about his track record. While he was portrayed as being gentle and fun-loving, his past was full of red flags.
Guy hadn't hidden his tricky divorce from Joan, but he failed to mention the restraining order she brought against him. According to court records obtained by The U.S. Sun, Guy “physically tried to threaten” a former partner in 2021 after their split. The paperwork explains how she threatened his ex, sent angry text messages, and antagonized his former partner.
The couple reached a “no-contact agreement," and the temporary protection order was never granted. He tried to seal the records of the incident to uphold his reputation, but he was denied.
Another The Golden Bachelorette contestant displaying serious red flags was Chock Chapple. While some fans warmed up to him, many noticed how controlling he was over Joan.
A Redditor commented that he felt "Chock is creepy, possessive, controlling and somehow always slightly sweaty. He’s basically gaslighting her under a facade into a relationship."
Some people think the series winner, Guy, is just misunderstood and not villainous. He was engaged to his partner of nine years, Kathy, when she died in 2022, which may be why he struggled on the dating show. He admitted to Us Weekly that he caught "some heat on social media for being a guy with no commitments,” but admits his previously long engagement was due to her being "very adamant about getting the kids out of school before we got married."
Fan favorite Mark Anderson, who is also the father of The Bachelor's Kelsey Anderson, was accused of only joining the show to be the next Golden Bachelor. They believed Mark was being deliberately closed off so he could be dropped from the show, but he soon shut down the allegations in an interview with Bustle.
I didn’t start The Golden Bachelorette for practice. I came on The Golden Bachelorette because I was hoping to find the start of a relationship.
Why Gerry Turner Tried To Seem More Innocent
The Golden Bachelor's leading man, Gerry Turner, is considered by fans of his season, although his bride is also not that favored by fans.
During the first season of the reality series, the 72-year-old retired restaurateur got engaged to New Jersey native Theresa Nist. They wed on Jan. 4, 2024, in a live, televised event, but they split three months later because they could not settle on where to live.
During his season, Gerry was portrayed as a widower who hadn't dated since the death of his wife of 43 years, Toni, who'd passed away six years before. It was later revealed that he had dated women and wasn't as innocent as he had portrayed himself. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to his ex-girlfriend and confirmed their nearly three-year relationship.
The exposé also noted that he had not been entirely truthful about his work history. He called himself a "retired restaurateur,” but LinkedIn noted that he sold his last restaurant in 1985 and has since had management roles.
Series | Number of Seasons |
The Golden Bachelor | 1 Season |
The Golden Bachelorette | 1 Season |
The finale of his season of the dating competition did little to fix his reputation. Teresa Nist was a popular contestant on the show, yet many felt like he played Leslie Fhima by calling her "the one," and caused her more heartbreak than necessary. He admitted when appearing on Good Morning America that he was "required to be a heartbreaker,"
Kathy And Her Mean Girl Clique
Fans of The Golden Bachelor fans were not happy watching the "mean girl" clique led by villain Kathy Swarts. When the official Instagram posted a video of several of the women getting ready together in a bathroom, comments were less than positive. April Kirkwood, Susan Noles, Nancy Hulkower, and Kathy SwaRTS were all styling each other's hair and creating a chant.
In the Instagram post's comment section, one person wrote: "I think the majority of us wants Kathy gone… she is ruining the camaraderie and the whole positive, mature, graceful and healthy environment among these beautiful women."
Another fan called Kathy a "ring leader," while someone else took to Instagram to say, "Kathy has not been a favorite of mine. She is ruining the show but I’m sure that’s what the producers want. Not what this viewer wants," added a fourth.
