For Tom Hardy, becoming Al Capone was no easy feat.

According to Daily Mail, photographer Greg Williams shared a new behind-the-scenes photo of the actor after undergoing an extensive makeup process to play Al Capone for his upcoming movie biopic, Capone.

Hardy looks unrecognizable in the photos as he portrays an aging Capone.

So what exactly did it take to transform Tom Hardy into America’s most notorious gangster?

Oscar-Worthy Makeup

The makeup artist responsible for Tom Hardy’s transformation is none other than Audrey Doyle.

Even Williams praised the “amazing makeup” by Doyle, who served as the makeup and prosthetics designer to Tom Hardy for the film.

Capone was 48 years old when he died in Palm Island, Florida in January 1947, so Doyle had to age the actor up for the role.

Clearly, it took a great deal of makeup and prosthetics to transform Hardy into the aging and sickly Al Capone, as seen in the newly released trailer and film photographs.

With balding, heavy wrinkles, and hostile eyes, Hardy looks unrecognizable as Capone.

Variety reports that the film will be released on VOD on May 12.

Developed originally under the title Fonzo by Vertical Entertainment and Redbox Entertainment, the title has now been changed to Capone.

The official synopsis reads: “The 47-year old Al Capone, after 10 years in prison, starts suffering from dementia, and comes to be haunted by his violent past.”

Capone was the head of the Chicago mob back in the 1920s and was prosecuted and imprisoned in 1932 for tax evasion.

The trailer shows a younger-looking Hardy firing a machine gun and shouting: “We made a promise that someday we could make it big!”
