When Variety asked Armie Hammer in 2018 if there would be a sequel to the Oscar-winning romantic drama Call Me by Your Name, he confirmed that "it will happen" but was unable to provide fans with any further details.
Two years later, director Luca Guadagnino has revealed that he's finally starting talks with the sequel's potential screenwriter, and promises the film will reunite Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer as well as several other members of the original cast.
Timothée And Armie Are Confirmed For The Film's Sequel
Fans of 2017's Call Me by Your Name don't have to worry about Elio or Oliver being recast in the film's sequel, because director Luca Guadagnino confirmed to Italian newspaper La Repubblica this week that both Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer will reprise their roles in the highly-anticipated follow-up.
“Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie,” Guadagnino promised.
Guadagnino Has Selected The Sequel's Screenwriter
While Guadagnino admitted that work on the Call Me by Your Name sequel has been put on hold during the coronavirus pandemic, he confirmed that he's already in talks with a screenwriter.
“Before coronavirus, I made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter I love very much, whose name I don’t want to say, to talk about the second part," Guadagnino told La Repubblica.
The mystery screenwriter will have big shoes to fill, as writer James Ivory won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the original film.
Armie Expressed Interest In Returning Back In 2018
Armie Hammer is likely as excited about the Call Me by Your Name sequel as the film's fans. The novel on which the film was based has a sequel, titled Find Me, which features the same characters and takes place 10 years after the original story. When Armie was asked during a 2018 Variety interview if he'd return for a follow-up, he expressed immediate interest.
“More than anything I trust the artistic direction to Luca and [novelist] André Aciman and to those guys who did such a good job handling it the first time around,” he stated. “The only thing I want to see is I want to see it happen. I want to do it again."
"I miss the whole crew. It was such a special time," he added. "If we get to do another one, I’ll feel really lucky."
