Vanderpump Rules is a Bravo Network reality series which follows the life and times of a group of young adults in Hollywood. Originally conceived as a spin-off of the popular The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, restaurant mogul Lisa Vanderpump is at the forefront of the activity. Vanderpump is owner to the restaurant SUR, where the cast members met early on in the series when they were working as bartenders or wait staff.
Now eight seasons in, Vanderpump Rules has morphed into a highly dramatic, semi-scripted performance. Though the show is based on real life events, some of the dramatics are amped up and exaggerated for the screen. Like any successful reality television series these days, it is filled with fighting, family drama, and break-ups.
Working out what is real and what is not is somewhat up to the viewer. The cast have also been forthright about the fact that not all that you see on the screen is pure reality.
20 FAKE: How 'Bad' Jax Taylor Really Is
Jax Taylor has played the quintessential bad boy role since the first season of Vanderpump Rules. His dramatic relationship with Stassi focused primarily on his bad behaviour, lies, and cheating. His reputation seems to have followed him well into the current season, though he seems to be on the straight and narrow in his current relationship with Brittany Cartwright.
19 REAL: Tom And Ariana's Commitment
Tom and Ariana have been a couple for years, and are definitely the most solid one in the show's history. Though Ariana has often said that she doesn't want children, Tom is so committed to being with her, that it didn't dissuade him from buying a house with her. These two are definitely in it for life.
18 FAKE: All The LaLa And James Fights
LaLa and James are the most on-again off-again friends on Vanderpump. From an initial hookup many years ago, James has always had a bit of a soft spot for LaLa. Despite the show portraying them as always being at war with each other, most of the fights are exaggerated for ratings.
17 REAL: Lisa Vanderpump's Successes
Lisa Vanderpump is one of the most successful Bravo reality stars, and she owes much of her success to her incredible entrepreneurial skills. She and her husband, Ken Todd, are the owners of over 36 restaurants and bars, and she appeared in the first nine seasons of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her net worth is $75 million.
16 FAKE: All The Girl Fights
Almost every season of Vanderpump Rules has had an epic group girl fight storyline. Stassi, Kristen, and Scheana have all taken turns being the ostracized friend, though the on-screen fights are edited to appear more intense than they are in real life. The extreme fighting we see on the show is definitely calculated.
15 REAL: Stassi's Obsession With Morbidity
Stassi is a very unique character, and her obsession with all things morbid is definitely real. The reality star has always had a fascination with ghouls and goblins, loves Halloween more than anything else, and spends lots of time researching true crime stories. This is definitely the real Stassi.
14 FAKE: The Well-Timed Hiring And Firing Of SUR Staff
Tuning in to an episode of Vanderpump Rules would have you believe that the serving staff who work at SUR are super disposable. It seems that there is an epic firing episode each season, with the firing of James Kennedy in season 7 being the most recent. Despite what the show portrays, many of these exits are planned before they are executed. Who's on the chopping block for this season?
13 REAL: Scheana's Boy Craziness
Scheana Shay hasn't been very lucky in love. She was famously the 'other woman' to Brandi Glanville's then-husband Eddie Cibrian in 2006. Then, her marriage to Michael Shay fell apart within less than two years. She immediately got back on the dating scene, falling hard for each new pursuit, but sadly, ending up alone.
12 FAKE: Tom Schwartz's Suitcase Of Cash
In Season 7, Tom Schwartz gets himself into a bit of hot water when his investment check to Lisa Vanderpump for TomTom bounces. Not to worry, the show came up with a wonderfully clever and silly way to get the cash to Lisa. In an almost film-like episode, Tom is seen going to the bank to withdraw $50,000 in cash, and then presenting it to Lisa in a leather suitcase. Just a bit unrealistic!
11 REAL: LaLa's Fiance's Private Jet
LaLa Kent only recently named her long-time partner (now fiance) as film producer Randall Emmett. With a 25-year career backing him, he has made quite a nice fortune. He is estimated to have a net worth of $16 million, and owns a private jet, which LaLa enjoys flaunting and taking her friends on.
