Call it being a diva, but the thing about Mariah Carey is that she doesn't let anyone bully her. For instance, she called out Sarah Bernhardt during a casual run-in after the comedian made a racist joke about her.
So it's no surprise that her radio interview with Wendy Williams left the DJ speechless. The shock jockette is known for probing into celebrities' lives, including Whitney Houston with whom she feuded. Here's how Williams' interrogation of Carey backfired.
What Happened Between Mariah Carey And Wendy Williams?
In 2003, Carey went on Williams' show on WBLS/107.5 FM in New York. At that time, the latter asked the Obsessed hitmaker about the alleged sabotage of her failed album and movie, Glitter. The DJ also confessed to Carey's ex-husband, Tommy Motola offering to pay her to spread false rumors about her guest.
After Williams asked several personal questions, like whether the Hero songstress slept with Tyrese or not — to which she answered, "No we didn't. Tyrese is cool but we didn't have a thing — Carey called the host out on her plastic surgeries.
"You know what Wendy, you and the triple Ds need to stop it right now," she said after the media personality accused her of getting breast implants. "Just 'cause you want everybody to be like you and have breast implants. Even if I did, I clearly, obviously wouldn't wanna talk about that. So why would you keep, like, hammering me about that?"
Carey went on to say, "I even brought you a bra," to which Williams said, "Thank you." Two years before that, the former did a phone interview with the Hot Topic Queen where she was also grilled about her alleged boob job. "Don't even make me start cursing," she told the host at that time.
"Because you're saying stuff that ain't true. I was also forced to wear certain garments. Let's just say that," Carey added, referring to her risqué photoshoot which Williams was criticizing back then. Before hanging up, she told the host, who was then worried that Carey might not come on to the show: "The audience is gonna believe that s**t. Weed that out, Wendy."
Why Didn't Mariah Carey Appear On The Wendy Williams Show?
Despite chatting with Williams on her radio show, Carey never made it to the former's TV program, The Wendy Williams Show, which first aired in 2008. It's not that she didn't want to make a guest appearance; it's just that the host wouldn't let her have the seat that showed her "good side."
Williams said she received a call from Carey's "people" in 2013, wanting to arrange an interview to promote her next album, which coincided with her gig as an American Idol judge. However, the rumorist declined as she thought she'd have to vacate her spot to give Carey her preferred side.
The music icon developed an insecurity over her "bad side" after someone told her on her first-ever photoshoot: "This is your good side [the right side of her face]. Only let people photograph you from your good side. Ever."
Later on, in 2021, she faced her fears and appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, sitting on the right side or Corden's left side. She was visibly uncomfortable and trying to hide her face with her hair. But she powered through and positioned herself in a flattering way in front of the camera. They even did some "faux candid" shots before starting the interview.
What Happened To Wendy Williams?
As Carey started to embrace her "bad side" even on Instagram, Williams has been away from the limelight following her battle with addiction. But recently, despite health concerns, there were rumors that she might be working on a comeback.
There have been no updates about that but after Sherri Shepherd temporarily filled in for her show, Williams' show has since been bumped with Shepherd's own talk show, Sherri in 2022. They seem to be on good terms but the latter noted that they're "not friends."
"No, [I have not spoken to Wendy personally]," Shepherd said in May 2022, per Blavity. "It's not like everybody thinks that in Hollywood, we all have each other's phone numbers. Wendy knows me because I've sat in as a guest and I guest hosted for her two years ago. So it's not like she doesn't know me but we're not friends."
In fact, that same month Williams expressed an intent to "speak with Sherri and sit down and meet" after their Instagram spat. Her lawyer, LaShawn Thomas even said that she has "no ill will" toward Shepherd. "Wendy requesting to have a sit-down with Sherri to have a meeting of the minds is the perfect solution as she has no ill will or intent," Thomas clarified.
"Wendy is preparing to get her show back in motion," the attorney continued. In May 2023, Shepherd replaced Williams' original producers as she wanted "fresh energy" on her set.
