Wendy Williams was a successful radio host for many years before moving to daytime television. Williams was known for her sometimes brutally honest takes on celebrity news. Williams' brand of commenting on the latest hot topics proved to be a successful formula for a talk show as well.
One of the celebrities Williams often talked about on her show was actress and comedian Sherri Shepherd. Shepherd eventually became a household name when she co-hosted The View with Barbara Walters. Shepherd would eventually take over Williams' time slot with her own talk show after leaving The View. This came after Williams left her show when she began experiencing medical issues.
Fans then began pointing out a comment Williams made about Shepherd in an episode which aired a decade ago. Those fans believe the comment predicted exactly how Shepherd would take over Williams' spot on daytime television.
Wendy Joked That Sherri Might Steal Someone's Job After She Exited 'The View' In 2014
In 2014, Williams brought up Shepherd during the "hot topics" segment of her show. Both Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy had just announced they were leaving The View.
Williams began by insinuating that Shepherd and McCarthy were actually fired, despite what their on-camera statements said. Williams used air quotes whenever she said Shepherd "quit" her job.
Williams then mentioned hearing Shepherd on The Tom Joyner Morning Show. Williams said she enjoyed Shepherd on the show. Williams then made a comment to Joyner's co-host Sybil Wilkes.
"Sybil, don't take any days off," Williams told Wilkes, "because Sherri needs a job and she sounded good!"
The moment can be seen around the 10-minute mark.
Many in the YouTube comments believed this remark was interesting considering how Shepherd would take over Williams' time slot years later.
"The Sherri Shepard job hunting segment didn't age well," one user wrote.
Another commented, "Damn that talk about Sherri stealing jobs."
"Not the Sherri bit," another user commented.
Wendy Williams Said That She Isn't Happy With The Way Her Show Ended
When Williams' daytime talk show, The Wendy Williams Show, began its 13th season in October 2021, the star herself wasn't present. The host took an indefinite leave of absence due to various medical issues. A bunch of guest hosts were brought in to fill her spot, one of whom was Sherri Shepherd.
By 2022, it was clear to the production company, Debmar-Mercury, they couldn't move forward with the show. Since Shepherd's appearances as guest host went over so well, she was offered her own show to replace Williams' time slot.
It was later announced that Williams' show would air its final episode at the end of its 13th season and Shepherd's show Sherri would premiere in the fall.
Williams told The New York Post that she didn't like the final episode of her show. When the outlet asked her why she didn't make an appearance, she said the production company didn't ask her to be there.
"[Debmar-Mercury] didn’t ask me to do that, so I didn’t. I sat in my apartment and I watched it. And [I was] like, 'Eek!'" she said.
Williams also told the outlet that she feels the production company should've done her final episode with her instead of the other guest hosts. She did make an exception for Fat Joe, however, who co-hosted with Remy Ma. Williams said Joe is her "favorite."
Sherri Landed Her Own Talk Show Despite Embarrassing Moments On 'The View'
Shepherd's time on The View wasn't without its share of controversy. During a discussion on evolution, Shepherd told co-host Whoopi Goldberg that she "never thought about" whether the world was flat.
Shepherd's comments were widely mocked and ridiculed after the episode aired. She has since clarified that she believes the Earth is round. When talking on the Two Funny Mamas podcast with Kym Whitley, Shepherd further explained that moment.
Shepherd said that she was intimidated by sitting across from women like Goldberg, Joy Behar, and Barbara Walters, all of whom she admired. She explained that since she saw them as being very accomplished and intelligent, she wondered what she could bring to the table. Shepherd was particularly insecure about the fact that she never went to college.
Shepherd said that she had a "brainfart" during the discussion and didn't think her experience was unique to other women who may have felt the same way in similar situations.
Shepherd overcame the embarrassment, however, and looked forward to her own show, Sherri, as its premiere was nearing closer.
"I love hot topics. I did our brand of Hot Topics with Jenny McCarthy on The View," Shepherd told Variety. I do pop culture every single day of Dish Nation. And so, whether or not I was filling in for Wendy, there would be some form of Hot Topics on my show because I love pop culture."
However, Shepherd did say that her brand of hot topics would have a different energy than Williams'.
"What I want to do is make it fun and friendly because I never want anybody to feel worse because they watched me talk about them, because I’ve been on the receiving end of that. I’m always coming from a place of love and joy and fun. That’s my motto for life."
