John Legend might be something of a beloved celebrity, but his wife Chrissy Teigen is decidedly not. After all of her controversial tweets, controversies with other celebrities and lesser-known figures, and being "canceled" more than once, Chrissy's name is almost always attached to drama.

In contrast, John Legend's isn't. Though he's married to Chrissy, and has three children with her, his career doesn't seem to have suffered because of her "scandals." At the same time, he doesn't often get involved with rumors about his wife or address the controversy. John has commented on the Chrissy drama a handful of times though; here's what he's had to say.

John And Chrissy Didn't Make Headlines Early In Their Marriage

John and Chrissy are said to have met in 2006, when Chrissy appeared in one of John's music videos. By 2013, they were married.

Though Chrissy was a model and appeared on various TV shows as a commentator and, at times, a co-host (Lip Sync Battle and FABLife), she wasn't the most recognized of celebrity names.

That seemed to change after people noticed Chrissy's funny but often times uncomfortable commentary on Twitter. Later, accusations that she had bullied multiple people (including other, albeit minor, celebrities like Courtney Stodden, Farrah Abraham, and fashion designer Michael Costello) seemed to color the public's view.

Despite her interest in cooking, and pursuing shows, a product line, and more, it seemed that every attempt at branching out caused Chrissy's controversial past to rear its ugly head again.

She later apologized for some of the bad behavior and admitted to being a cyberbully, but the backlash was severe and seemed to impact her reputation long-term.

Yet she didn't admit to some of the content of alleged messages and didn't seem to respond to Michael Costello's allegations that she threatened brands who had previously planned to work with him.

And where was John Legend during all of this?

What Does John Legend Have To Say About Chrissy Teigen?

Chrissy Teigen clearly doesn't need her husband to speak for her; she has addressed most of the allegations against her head-on and publicly. Courtney Stodden, one of the people Chrissy apparently goaded with suggestions that Courtney should harm themselves, claimed that Chrissy never apologized in private; the star later blocked Courtney on social media.

Regardless, Chrissy put on a brave face for the public and didn't go dark on social media or deny most of the allegations against her.

Fans might have expected John Legend to be more vocal about his wife's reputation, but he has only commented a handful of times. With the Michael Costello drama, John took to social media to publicly call out the designer and drag him for falsifying the DMs in question.

In a series of tweets, John wrote, among other things, "Don't talk to me about my wife as if I haven’t lived with her, married her and raised kids with her."

Echoing claims that the DMs Costello presented were fake, Legend continued, "I know who she is and y’all didn’t even do a good job of mimicking her voice in those fake a-- DMs. By the way, when are you going to admit they were fake? Admit they were fake please."

Regarding the Courtney Stodden drama, Legend never appeared to address the issue publicly. Mirror noted that he 'broke his silence' on the matter when asked how Chrissy was doing during the fallout after Stodden went public. Legend is quoted as saying only, "She's doing great."

To his credit, if John Legend had taken to Twitter again to support his wife, or defend her in any way, that might have detracted from Chrissy's own public statements.

At this point, it's assumed Chrissy only releases statements with the support of her team (every celebrity has a PR person or team, right?—or gets one after their first scandal). Having John speak out—as he did on Twitter, addressing Michael Costello as "bruh" at one point—could hurt her case.

Not that Chrissy Teigen is a beloved celebrity these days by any means. It seems there is still fallout due to her online bullying phase, which she repeatedly emphasized was the 'old' Chrissy and not the one who's healed and had therapy.

Of the drama, Chrissy said, in part, "The truth is, I’m no longer the person who wrote those horrible things. I grew up, got therapy, got married, had kids, got more therapy, experienced loss and pain, got more therapy and experienced more life. AND GOT MORE THERAPY."

She elaborated, "Life has made me more empathetic. I’m more understanding of what motivates trolling - the instant gratification that you get from lashing out and clapping back, throwing rocks at someone you think is invincible because they’re famous."

Chrissy has seemed to lie low in recent months, backing out of some projects and quietly welcoming her third child with John in January 2023.
