As previously mentioned, Jake Cunningham broke up with April Marie Melohn in the season finale of The Ultimatum instead of proposing to her. His decision was due to the connection he had made with his experiment-partner Rae Williams. However, while breaking up with Melohn, Cunningham told her that he had no intention of pursuing a relationship with Williams post-show and that his decision had nothing to do with Williams. “I was heartbroken. I didn’t get chosen,” Melohn recalled of her initial reaction to the breakup. “And it felt a little bit better that I wasn’t not getting chosen because of another woman.”
Viewers then saw Cunningham offer Williams a chance to run away together. Melohn was not aware of this until Williams’s previous partner Zay Wilson informed her of the betrayal. “I was in such shock because [Cunningham] just toke me that they’re not doing that,” Melohn said. “I was so distraught. I just hung up and just cried because I was just like, it’s one thing to not hurt my feelings. But it’s another thing to just lie to my face. Following the end of Netflix’s first season of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, more details about the tensions between April Marie Melohn and Jake Cunningham surfaced. In an interview with Us Weekly, Cunningham claimed that Melohn had cheated on him during filming. “We had an agreement going on the show that we would date the people on the show and be involved with the whole experiment, but when it came to her going off and finding some other guy off the show, that was a big surprise to me,” he said.
“I went by all of April Marie’s guidelines because she wanted to do the show,” Cunningham continued. “I was open and honest with her. April Marie Melohn waited until after the first season of Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On had come to an end to announce her new relationship with Cody Cooper. The day after the reunion special aired on the streaming network, during which Melohn revealed she was in a committed relationship, Melohn shared an adorable video montage on her Instagram to introduce the new man in her life.
“One day… you’re gonna meet someone. And they’re gonna make you realize… That there was never anything wrong with you,” Melohn captioned the video on April 14th, 2022. She went on to describe how strong and loving her relationship with Cooper is. “I love you, I respect you & I adore you for a million things,” she wrote. Melohn and Cooper announced in February 2023 that they were expecting a baby. The couple learned the news themselves in December 2022. The news came shortly after fellow The Ultimatum castmates Colby Kissinger and Madlyn Ballatori announced they are pregnant with their second child.
