Several years ago, it seemed that Armie Hammer could have it all. Following a breakout performance on The Social Network, the actor delivered a memorable performance opposite Timotheé Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name. The 2017 film had been so well received that a sequel was even initially announced. But as it turns out, just a few years later, Hammer would splendidly fall from grace.
After being recognized as one of Hollywood’s rising stars, the California native got caught in a bizarre scandal that seemingly ended his career. Since then, Hammer hasn’t starred in anything after working on his last film, Death on the Nile. After retreating from the spotlight, it also seems that he’s found a new career, although it has nothing to do with being a hotel concierge as previous reports suggested.
What Are The Allegations Against Armie Hammer?
It all began in January 2021 when several women came forward with multiple allegations against Hammer. It involved everything from rather bizarre intimate interactions to fantasies that appear to be cannibalistic in nature. Screenshots of these supposed interactions through text messages were also shared by an Instagram account called House of Effie.
Soon after, other women came forward with similar stories regarding their experience with Hammer. Some of his exes also spoke out including me Courtney Vucekovich who told Page Six that Hammer wanted to “break my rib and barbecue and eat it.” Around the same time, model Paige Lorenzo also came forward with a similar account of her time with Hammer. She also claimed that the actor carved his initial on her skin.
Just a few months later in March, a woman who identified herself as Effie came forward, accusing Hammer of asasult. During a press conference via Zoom with her lawyer, Gloria Allred, Effie provided details of the alleged assaults, along with other “violent acts” she experienced at the hands of Hammer.
Effie also claimed that as time went on, the actor became “increasingly more violent” with her.
More recently in April 2023, it was revealed that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office is reviewing some allegations of sexual assault against Hammer. So far, no charges have been filed and no one has come forward to the public with their story.
What Happened To Armie Hammer?
After multiple controversies regarding Hammer (and his family) came to light, the actor’s fall from grace started almost immediately. In January 2021, when the first accusations came out, Hammer decided to drop out of the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Shotgun Wedding (he was eventually replaced by Josh Duhamel). Soon after, it was also announced that the actor would no longer be part of the Paramount+ series The Offer.
The following month, it was also confirmed top talent agency William Morris Endeavour (WME) dropped Hammer. His publicist also cut ties with him soon after. Around the same time, it was also announced that Hammer’s role in the Starz series Gaslit would be recast.
In March, it was also announced that Hammer is out of the upcoming film Billion Dollar Spy. Several weeks later, the actor also revealed that he will not return to Broadway for The Minutes. Hammer previously appeared in the play before it got shut down due to COVID-19.
Since then, the actor hasn’t secured any kind of work in Hollywood and Hammer revealed that this has taken a toll on his finances. During a recent interview with Air Mail, the actor estimated that between all his lost jobs and legal fees in 2021, he lost around $14 million to $16 million in that year alone.
“My financial status is I am not only broke; I am massively in debt,” Hammer even added. In 2022, he also faced a lawsuit from American Express over an unpaid balance. The credit card company alleged that Hammer owed them over $60,000. However, American Express later asked to have the suit dismissed in January 2023.
What Does Armie Hammer Do Now?
For a few years now, Hammer has been staying in the Cayman Islands where his children with ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers also reside. And while there were rumors that the actor has since taken a job as a concierge in the islands, Hammer has actually been busy working as a timeshares salesman. This was essentially the first gig he managed to secure for himself after entering a treatment facility following his career collapse.
In recent months, however, Hammer has also been contemplating another career move. After undergoing treatment himself, he believes he would make a good sober companion for other people who have just completed rehab.
“I’m going to move in with him and live with him, get him on a healthy routine, get him into a good schedule of [recovery] meetings, take him to the gym, cook healthy food for him,” Hammer explained. He also feels like he’s already at the part of his recovery where he’s “able to help others.”
As for acting, Hammer doesn’t see the possibility of making a return for now. He also acknowledged that no one would cast him at the moment. “No one will insure me,” the actor continued. “I can’t get bonded for a project – nothing.”
