Many fans have wondered if Southern Charm may be faking its storylines, like Whitney Sudler-Smith's relationship with his mother, Patricia Altschul. But even if it was scripted, people would probably keep watching. Part of this is due to the interesting cast members, like Season 1 OG, Shep Rose.
Even though he may be too old for his younger co-stars at this point, he's still one of the controversial figures in the show. Just take his recent messy comments about his ex, Taylor Ann Green, whom he broke up with in 2022.
But that's his Southern Charm—poor-behaving rich not-real-kid-anymore. After all, Shep is the third-wealthiest cast member of the show. Aside from his well-known generational wealth, he's also participated in many business endeavors.
The reality TV star makes sure to remind fans about it by flaunting his lifestyle on social media.
Updated January 2025: Here's everything to know about Shep's net worth and what he does with it.
5 Shep Rose Has An Estimated Net Worth Of $5 Million
Shep Knows He's "Lucky" To Be Born Into A "Very Accomplished" Family
Shep has an estimated net worth of $5 million. And as his fame rises, his net worth will just continue to rise. It's no secret that most of his fortune comes from his family, whom he described as "very accomplished" people. "And then there's me," he once joked, admitting that he's "lucky."
Shep revealed that "the character in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald named Jordan Baker" was his great aunt. "She's a champion golfer, so I've got golf in my blood," he said.
In 2017, Shep was forced to defend his "bon vivant" lifestyle on Watch What Happens Live. "I live my life and I'm fortunate enough to kind of have fun and do my thing," he said when slammed for spending his family money. "And can it last forever? No, it can't."
Aside from his presumed inheritance, which hasn't been publicized, Shep also makes a good $25,000 per episode on Southern Charm. He's been on it for 10 seasons, so that's not a bad "side hustle" at all.
4 Shep Rose Has Invested His Money In His Own Clothing Line ShepGear
We're Not Sure People Actually Buy ShepGear
A lot of reality stars eventually launch lifestyle businesses after some time. Southern Charm's Craig Conover even has a successful pillow brand. For Shep, it's his clothing brand, ShepGear, which touts itself as the "online home for all the fashion ideas of Shep Rose."
Looking at the brand's catalog, it seems that his fashion ideas revolve around casual wear, mainly hats. It's unknown how much money Shep has put into ShepGear, or if it's as big as Craig's venture. But it honestly seems like a hobby or merch (who actually buys those American flag hats?)
3 Shep Rose Used To Work In Dubai Real Estate
Shep Described His Realtor Days As "Crazy"
In defending his lavish lifestyle, Shep said that if he needed to work again, he would. But he was just happy not working after a "crazy" real estate career in Dubai. "But if I needed to, I would beat the street and do my thing," he said back then.
"I've worked in Dubai," he continued. "I've sold real [estate]. I lived in Dubai and sold real estate. It was crazy. So right now I'm happy just kind of being the bon vivant as it were."
2 Shep Rose Owns A Few Restaurants
Shep Has Invested In A Few Dining Ventures
Given that Shep hails from the south, it's no surprise he's taken an interest in being a restaurateur. He co-owns three restaurants in Charleston: the Commodore, The Alley, and the restaurant in the Palace Hotel.
Shep also owns stakes in other restaurants, bars and hotels around Charleston. Again, it's unknown how much money he has spent on these ventures, but they definitely aren't cheap.
1 Shep Rose Lives In A "Fancy" Home
Shep Traded His Charleston Home For A Beach Bachelor's Pad
In 2024, Shep bought a beach bungalow in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. "The house...it's not very big, not a lot of bells and whistles," he said, but he's planning on "fancy"-ing it up, because duh.
"I think one day soon I'll probably tear it down and build up a fancy house, but I don't need that right now," he said of his plans. "I'm gonna be smart [and] fiscally conservative. [I'll] keep my powder dry, as my father likes to say."
For now, you can rent it out on Airbnb. Shep said he's also "looking at houses out West" after touring Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. "I ended up having a hell of a lot of fun... seeing some real estate, meeting some cool people," he said.
However, he admitted that "the interest rates, the mortgage rates, it's just. Crazy. It's not the right time. Not now. But I do love out West. I do love Montana, and fishing and hunting and stuff."
Shep used to live in a 1,750-square-foot home in Charleston. He purchased it in 2014. But in 2021, the three-bed and 3.5-bathroom property was sold for $585,000 within 14 days.
