Lauren Conrad's net worth is $40 million and the former reality star is definitely a success story. She has her own fashion and accessories brand and also has home decor and children's clothing. Everything is beautiful, fun, and accessible. Of course, Conrad got her start on The Hills, the MTV reality show that she didn't love starring on. Now she has two children, three-year-old son Liam and one-year-old Charlie, with her husband William Tell, whom she married in 2014.
Even though LC has been honest about starring on The Hills, there was talk once of another reality show, and fans are curious about what happened there. Let's take a look at why it didn't end up getting made.
The Reality Show That Never Was
Conrad became a published author and has been involved in many projects after her time on The Hills came to an end. It's amazing to see all of the irons that she has had in the fire.
In fall 2010, MTV said that it would produce a new reality series about Lauren Conrad, and MTV decided not to go ahead with the show in February 2011, according to Entertainment Weekly. It turns out that LC filmed a pilot but that was it for the show.
David Janollari, who was MTV's EVP, Head of Programming, said, “It was a great attempt but it just didn’t feel like a perfect fit for us now." Janollari also said, "We decided not to go ahead with the show. She did do a pilot. There were talks about whether we could somehow manage to put together a special based on that footage but that’s also a big question mark based on her interest in that."
What is LC's side of the story? According to EW, Conrad wanted the show to focus on her business, and it sounds like she didn't want it to be a repeat of The Hills which was about dating, birthday parties, friendships breaking up, and everything in between. Conrad's statement said, "MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life. We agreed going into the project that this show would be an aspirational one, focusing on my career and my goals and not my personal relationships."
A Good Thing
Fans are definitely sad to learn that Lauren Conrad almost had her own reality show, as everyone would love to learn more about her fashion lines and her life as a businesswoman.
It sounds like LC herself wasn't that upset, though. In an interview with Lucky magazine, she said that her fashion line Paper Crown was getting rejected by showrooms when she was associated with the reality show. Conrad explained, "It's easier to launch the line without MTV. A lot of people in fashion don't want to be linked with anything that has to do with reality TV. Showrooms were turning us down."
Conrad also said, "It didn't feel like a perfect fit. It's difficult to compete with all the Jersey Shore-type shows out there. Besides, there weren't any scenes of me getting drunk or fighting, so what's the point?" LC knows what she's talking about, of course, as The Hills featured many moments where she was crying or mad at someone.
According to Fashionista.com, 15 people would have been in Paper Crown's office, which was pretty tiny, to film the show, and Conrad recognized that would have been a bit distracting. She noted that the series was shot documentary-style, which is a contrast to The Hills and other reality shows of that nature. It does sound like things worked out just fine.
LC's fans will always want to see her on the small screen, as she's a relatable person and feels like a friend, but it doesn't sound like that's likely to happen. According to ET Online, Conrad appeared at the Create and Cultivate event in L.A. in February 2020 and said that she loves that her fans ask if she'll go back to reality TV but she doesn't want to. She said "I'm not gonna do it" and continued, "I’ve got a pretty full plate so I’m not looking to add anything."
Any TV show about Lauren Conrad and her fashion career would be endlessly fascinating, but it's easy to understand why it wasn't considered marketable enough in the land of reality TV, where drama sells and viewers are constantly watching for fights and conflict. Thankfully, LC's fans can follow her beautiful Instagram account and follow along with the new clothing and products that she's always releasing.
