Whoopi Goldberg was booted from The View for two weeks after her comments about the Holocaust received significant backlash. Despite an Apology from the Actress, ABC News announced her immediate suspension. On Monday, the host said the Holocaust “was not about race.”
Whoopi Goldberg Received Backlash For Comments About The Holocaust She Said On Monday's Episode Of 'The View.'
An apology wasn’t enough to fend off all the criticism Whoopi received for her comments on Monday’s episode of The View. The drama all began when the panel was discussing a Tennessee school removing Maus, a graphic novel about Nazi death camps, from its curriculum.
“If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it. Because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race,” she said.
Co-hosts Joy Behar and Ana Navarro quickly pushed back against Whoopi, explaining how the Nazis didn't view Jewish people as the same race. Whoopi refused to relent on the issue, “the minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley.”
ADL, an anti-Semitism group, immediately condemned Whoopi’s comments and the host issued an apology on Twitter hours later.
Whoopi returned to her spot at Tuesday’s episode of The View to issue another apology, saying that on Monday’s show she “misspoke”, and that the Holocaust was “indeed about race.”
Whoopi Goldberg Won't Be On 'The View' For Two Weeks Following Her Remarks, And It's Not The First Time She's Gotten In Trouble.
But it wasn’t enough. ABC has announced that Whoopi will be out of work for two weeks, as she has been suspended from the show.
"Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments," ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement.
"While Whoopi has apologized, I've asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments," Godwin added. "The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities."
Sources said that the show's staff “are stunned by the network's soft touch on her remarks,” especially after ABC fired Roseanne Barr so quickly over a racist tweet towards Valerie Jarrett.
“These comments are absolutely abhorrent and outrageous, and it’s time Disney and ABC grew a pair and fired her,” the source continued. “‘There is a blind spot on The View when it comes to anti-Semitism. It is never a big enough hate crime for them.”
This isn’t the first time Whoopi has found herself in hot water either. Previously, the co-host got flack for defending Bill Cosby on the show.
