Upon its release back in 2019, HBO’s Euphoria saw great levels of success among audiences. Led by now-producer Zendaya, the show features a talented ensemble of successful actors, many of who saw their lives and careers skyrocket due to the show. In between glittery viral make-up looks and dramatic character arcs, fans could not get enough of the show and were excited to see what the future held.
However, after a 3-year break due to the COVID pandemic, the show’s second season did not seem to deliver in the same way that the first had. Many viewers across the world were disappointed by the season and were left wondering if the same would occur in its next installment. One particular member of the cast was also reported to have been left disappointed by the show during its second season. 25-year-old actress Barbie Ferreira was reported to have had a less than pleasant time during the production for the second season and has even recently announced her departure from the show. So let’s take a look at what may have led Ferreira to this point and what the future holds for the young actress.
8 Barbie Ferreira Joined The Cast Of The Show In 2019 For Its Debut Season
3 years ago, Ferreira joined the talented ensemble of actors for Euphoria’s debut season. Upon its release in July 2019, Ferreira’s character of Kat Hernandez quickly became a fan favorite. Her season 1 arc saw Ferreira’s character go from an insecure and shy teenager to a liberated and far more confident force of nature. Despite the character’s somewhat problematic storyline, fans of the show loved her and were beyond excited to see what season 2 would bring for Ferreira’s Kat.
7 Barbie Ferreira Initially Felt This About Her Character
Prior to Ferreira's reported season 2 feud with Euphoria’s creator Sam Levinson, she had nothing but praises to sing about her character and her time filming the show. During an Unfiltered discussion on the official Euphoria YouTube channel, Ferreira showed her passion for Kat and the show as she went into depth on her character.
Ferreira stated, “Every single struggle on this show is so layered, and so complex, and so not necessarily positive or negative. It's a reflection of a lot of different stories that are very current.” She added, “She’s [Kat] so special to me because it’s so relevant to what I went through too when I was a teenager.”
6 Barbie Ferreira’s Future On The Show Looked Promising
Following the massive success that the first season of Euphoria saw, fans were ecstatic for their favorite characters to return to their screens and pick up where they left off in their dramatic series arcs. By the end of season 1, Ferreira’s Kat was at a peak point in her storyline. After a shady encounter with a menacing sexual online presence, Kat found herself at somewhat of a crossroads; Should she continue her online cam pastime or quit and nurture her budding relationship with her then-boyfriend Ethan (Austin Abrams)? With such a cliffhanger of a close on Kat’s season 1 storyline, many were expecting big things for the character in season 2.
5 Fans Were Left Disappointed With Barbie Ferreira’s Season 2 Storyline
However, despite the hype, it’s safe to say that fans’ expectations for Kat in season 2 were not met as they were left beyond disappointed with the direction that the show went with the character. During the season’s weekly episode release, fans began to notice the odd direction that Levinson had written for Kat. In between her very little screen time and her bizarre treatment of others around her, audiences began to turn on the character, and she was even labeled “cartoonishly cruel”.
4 Barbie Ferreira Reportedly Fell Out With Sam Levinson During The Filming For Season 2
The reasoning behind the limited screen time and less than satisfactory story writing may have been due to Ferreira’s reported feud with the show’s director and writer Levinson during the production of the show’s second season. According to Elle Australia, the feud was initially reported by Deuxmoi where it was stated that several of the Euphoria actors did not seem to agree with the dark direction that Levinson was taking the series. Following the news, it was then reported that tensions hit an all-time high when Ferreira stormed out of the set following a spat with Levinson. According to the source, this led Levinson to cut a lot of Ferreira’s season 2 storyline and scenes.
3 This Is What Barbie Ferreira Had To Say About Kat In Season 2
After her absence from the Euphoria season 2 premiere and the news of the feud going viral online, all eyes were on Ferreira for some form of clarification on the situation. However, it seems as though Ferreira chose to keep any potential tension under wraps, and instead pinned her odd season 2 storyline down to the season’s general theme. The actress described this during an interview with The Cut where she focused on her character and steered clear from any talk of a creative feud with Levinson.
Ferreira stated, “Kat’s journey this season is a little more internal and a little mysterious to the audience. She is secretly going through a lot of existential crises,” She went on to say, “She loses her marbles a little bit — just like everyone else in this season. The theme is everyone’s gone a little crazy.”
2 In August 2022 Barbie Ferreira Announced Her Departure From The Show
While many were curious to see how this reported feud would affect Ferreira’s future in the series going forwards, the actress herself recently revealed that there was going to be no future for Kat. On August 25, Ferreira announced her departure from the show through her Instagram account in a sweet story post.
The post stated, “After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye. I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today," Before then stating, "I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez.”
