From the beginning, Good 4 U gave fans major Misery Business vibes. In the song, Olivia sings about an ex who moved on with someone new a little too soon, leaving her unwell. In the music video, directed by Petra Collins (who previously directed Selena Gomez's music video for Fetish), Olivia plays a cheerleader who, after a while, is sick of pretending like she's doing fine, and basically goes on a full-on rampage and begins to plot some serious revenge as the video takes a dark turn. The Good 4 U music video reminded fans of a Megan Fox movie from the late 2000s, but the song also sounded familiar.
Sour has become certified triple platinum and is even nominated for 7 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year. Thanks to these impressive achievements, the singer has an estimated net worth of $5 million. But despite all of Olivia's success, it turns out she still has her fair share of critics, many of whom still tend to discredit or deny her creativity as a songwriter. Paramore is cool with Olivia Rodrigo's Good 4 U, but fans are still fighting. Here is why Olivia's hit single sounds so familiar.
Olivia Rodrigo's 'Good 4 U' Sounds A Lot Like 'Misery Business' By Paramore
Following the release of Olivia Rodrigo's third single off her debut album Sour, fans began pointing out how similar Good 4 U sounded to Paramore's 2007 megahit Misery Business. Mashups of both songs started popping up across social media, and they did blend pretty smoothly with one another.
As to how both parties reached this agreement, there are conflicting reports. Paramore's label, Warner Chappell Music, shared an Instagram story of Olivia reaching number one on the Top 40 music chart with Good 4 U and added the caption, "A huge shoutout to our writers Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro." Hayley shared the story on her Instagram, adding, "Our publisher is wilding right now." According to a Variety insider, the credit is an interpolation. Olivia was allegedly in touch with Paramore before the release of Good 4 U. If this is true, one question remains: Why weren't Hayley and Josh's names initially listed in the song's credits? Nowadays, their names are showing up on Spotify under credits for Good 4 U.
On the other hand, celeb gossip Instagram page DeuxMoi is reporting that Paramore's team allegedly took legal action and that both parties reached a settlement out of court that now allows Hayley and Josh to receive 50% of the publishing. For this reason, if Olivia takes home the trophy for Album of the Year at the 2022 Grammy Awards show, Hayley and Josh Farro will also get the win since they are now listed as co-writers of this song.
Taylor Swift Got A Writing Credit On Olivia Rodrigo's 'Sour' Album
Good 4 U is the third song on Sour to feature sounds from a different recorded song as Olivia was very upfront about Taylor Swift's influence on 1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back. Olivia credited Taylor and famed composer Jack Antonoff from the very beginning after she admittedly interpolated their song New Year's Day. In addition, Olivia retroactively gave Taylor, Jack, and St. Vincent songwriting credit on Deja Vu for its parallels with their song Cruel Summer.
On the other hand, Olivia was also accused of co-opting a guitar riff from Elvis Costello's 1978 hit Pump It Up on her latest single Brutal. But the veteran rocker made it clear that he's not looking for any credit, tweeting, "This is fine by me. It's how rock and roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That's what I did."
Miley Cyrus Agreed When Fans Compared' 7 Things' To Olivia Rodrigo's 'Good 4 U'
2021 marked 13 years since Miley Cyrus dropped her song 7 Things as the lead single off her first studio album, Breakout. This track was a game-changer for Miley as it was her first solo single she put out with no affiliation to her Disney persona Hannah Montana. And to celebrate her iconic song's 13th anniversary, Miley took to her Instagram with an epic photo and video dump, which featured cover art, snippets of its music video, and clips of her performing it live throughout the years. But what caught most fans' attention was a screenshot of a tweet comparing Miley's song to Olivia's Good 4 U. One user wrote, "Olivia Rodrigo's Good 4 U is the 2021 Disney equivalent of Miley Cyrus' 7 Things." Miley agreed with this fan's take and shared the tweet.
