Selena Gomez is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and she's been known to have famous friends, A-list status relationships, and more.
Years back, Gomez quietly had a kidney transplant, and the kidney was provided by friend, Fancia Raisa. Raisa, who's had her own career in Hollywood, recently made headlines when she revealed that Gomez's fans have been relentlessly bullying her, which has affected her mental health.
Let's look at the situation at hand, and learn why Selena Gomez's fans have been bullying Francia Raisa, the woman who donated a kidney to the film and music star. Turns out, their friendship has had some ups and downs.
Francia Raisa Donated A Kidney To Selena Gomez
For the unfamiliar, several years back, Selena Gomez needed a kidney transplant to help with her fight against Lupus.
Per Lupus Foundation of America, "Lupus is a chronic (long-term) disease that can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. It’s an autoimmune disease, which means that your immune system — the body system that usually fights infections — attacks healthy tissue instead."
In 2017, Gomez, who had been laying low for some time, publicly came out, and discussed her kidney transplant.
In her post, Gomez wrote, "I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering."
Gomez added that her friend was the one who provided her with a kidney, and that a lot of progress is being made in Lupus research.
In the years following this, the pair remained close, and Gomez honored her friend's sacrifice many times, always making sure that Raisa was given credit for her extraordinary bravery, and for her unwavering friendship.
This was 5 years ago, but recently, Raisa's name has been in the headlines, only this time, it's due to bullying from Selena's fans.
Selena's Fans Have Bullied Raisa Online
Raisa spoke out on some of the intense and hateful messages that she has received, and they are quite shocking, to say the least.
When speaking with TMZ, the actress said, "Now I’m being bullied like crazy. It’s not good at all. It’s not fun either.”
The actress continued, even noting that Gomez herself would not approve of her fans bullying her in any way.
"The only thing I’m going to say is in no way, shape or form does anyone condone bullying, especially Selena. She literally has a whole nonprofit dedicated to mental health, and I believe Rare Beauty even just had an event for mental health."
The intense bullying has affected her mental health.
"So the fact that I’m now being bullied as I am, it’s messing with me mentally," she continued.
If Raisa donated a kidney to Gomez, then why are fans coming after her in such a way? Well, as it turns out, Raisa and Gomez aren't as close as they once were.
Raisa And Gomez Have Had Some Conflict
The pair, who met as youngsters back in the 2000s, were close for many years, but comments from Selena started their falling out, at least in the public eye.
Gomez told Rolling Stone, "I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn't belong. I felt the presence of everyone around me living full lives. I had this position, and I was really happy, but...was I? Do these materialistic things make me happy?"
This led to Raisa commenting "interesting" under the post. Eventually, she deleted her reply, but it was visible for the entire world to see.
Gomez responded in a social media video, talking about how she failed to mention every single friend of hers. Clearly, there was a disconnect between the two, and now the whole world was watching.
Since then, it does not appear that the duo have patched things up. This, unfortunately, is what has led to Gomez's fans brutally attacking Raisa online.
Again, there's no way to know what has happened between closed doors, but Selena's comments to Rolling Stone clearly rubbed Francia the wrong way.
Only time will tell if the two are able to patch things up or not. Regardless of their friendship status, Gomez's fans should probably chill. They don't know either personally, so sending attacks online is well beyond crossing the line.
