Snoop Dogg and his wife Shante Broadus have been married an incredible 24 years. It might surprise fans of the rapper famous for his playful and partying rhymes, however, he is quite the romantic when it comes to his wife.
His relationship is a long-lasting marriage in an industry that doesn't seem to encourage them – and what's more, Snoop and Shante tied the knot not once, but twice.
Snoop’s worth more than $100 million now, but it wasn’t money that brought the two together back in high school. It’s been a roller coaster ride, like most marriages, but today with three children together, and grandchildren, his family life seems to be going strong.
Updated on May 31, 2021, by Michael Chaar: Snoop Dogg and Shante Taylor officially tied the knot back in 1997, however, their romance hasn't always been easy. In 2004, Snoop filed for divorce from Shante due to irreconcilable differences, however, he later revealed that he had last his way, noting the importance of his wife and kids, and decided to renew their vows in a "second wedding" in 2008. Since then, the couple has been through a parade of cheating allegations, however, they remain stronger than ever. With the recent news surrounding the rapper's mom and her health, Shante has definitely been a rock for Snoop during these uncertain times.
A High School Romance – A Devoted Dad
Snoop Dogg was still Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. when he met Shante in high school at Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California.
Snoop was already a rapper in practice, while Shante was a typical high school student with a lot of interests outside of music. Nonetheless, the two started to date, and on June 14, 1997, got married at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina Del Rey, California.
To back up a bit, son Cordé Broadus was born in 1994. Cordell followed in 1997, and Cori, their daughter, in 1999. In 2008, Snoop made his debut on reality TV as himself – a father – in Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, which lasted two seasons on E!
Along with his four kids, Snoop is also a grandfather, a role he seems to relish. Son Cordé and former partner Jessica Kyzer had son, Zion in 2015. He also has a daughter Eleven, with partner Soroya Love. Cordell is also a father of a daughter, Lulu.
Tragedy struck the extended family in September 2019 when Cordé announced via Instagram that his 10-day-old son, Kai Love, had sadly passed away.
The Almost Divorce – And A New Beginning
With all the pressures of fame and constant touring, the relationship started drifting apart, and Snoop filed for divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences in 2004, however, he was obviously still torn about the decision.
Shante spoke with Bossip Magazine regarding Snoop's uncertainty at the time. “Yeah [laughs] Girl, he didn’t know. You’re trying to leave me and you’re asking me what you should do? So he didn’t know, it was just a lot. And you know I understand. It’s hard for me and I’m just his wife. He’s actually the star.”
She went on to blame the women who were constantly trying to get together with the famous rapper. “It is pressure. I mean, these women, they’re out here trying to take something home. So they’re not playing,” she said.
Snoop Dogg talked about the low point in their marriage in an interview with MTV, as reported by E! Online.
"I was trying to get a divorce, but I went back home and I fell back in love with my wife and kids. A lot of times you get cloudy. This music industry is a mother, man, and it'll take your vision and blur it. But God is good, so I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life — so I threw the papers away.
Snoop went on to say that his revelation also made it clear that he did not, in fact, want to get a divorce. "I don't want to get a divorce. So if you hear about a divorce, it'll be my wife divorcing me. It won't be me divorcing her...And I made a mistake, so I'm trying to get back right."
On January 12, 2008, Snoop surprised Shante with a surprise vow renewal ceremony in front of 200 guests. The “second wedding” took place on a 20-acre ranch that belonged to his friend, RnB singer Charlie Wilson.
It’s Been A Roller Coaster Ride
The ups and downs of marriage are never over. In 2008, the world learned – allegedly, along with Snoop himself – that he was the father of Julian Broadus, born in 1998.
The mother is Laurie Helmond, who is also said to have gone to the same high school. Snoop has acknowledged his paternity and financial obligations.
Shante has used her @bosslady_ent Instagram account to talk about the ups and downs of her marriage. In 2016, she made a provocative post that read, "what's a queen without a king? well, historically speaking, more powerful".
In December 2019, there was another allegation of cheating, this time by YouTube personality Celina Powell.
In a video, Powell gave details of the encounter that is supposed to have happened in 2018. Powell later admitted that she’d been bored and wanted to "say something outrageous."
Before the truth came out, though, Shante made another cryptic Instagram post. "U ever watch somebody u love turn into somebody u don't know." After a crying face and broken heart emoji, she added the caption, "Where Did We Go Wrong."
Things seemed to be back on track, however, in time for their anniversary in June 2020, when Snoop posted a picture of the happy couple to Instagram, proving that the two are doing alright.
Now, as Snoop asks fans to pray for his mother and her health, it's become apparent that Shante has been a huge support for the rapper during these difficult times.
