Gone is the era of new concepts and films in Hollywood. The current trend is that of doing a sequel or a reboot of a movie that proved to make big money at the box office. After all, if lightning struck once, it should again, right? Unfortunately, more often than not, the answer is no. And because of this, fans who love their cult classic, Devil Wears Prada, do not want the film's memory revived in a way that only causes it to lose its luster.
In terms of box office dollars, Devil Wears Prada was a smash. This is because it made eight times what it cost to produce the film. But it also was a "chick-flick" that was not a romantic comedy, a type of movie that was few and far between at the time. As such, it brought women in, in droves to watch and see that it is possible for a female lead character to be interesting, evolve, and learn about herself without the story revolving around a man in the process.
It is because of this that Devil Wears Prada stands the test of time. And also why fans of the film want the flick to stand on its own versus creating a sequel that would only ruin its legacy.
Fans Think Hollywood Should Just Leave Devil Wears Prada Be
First and foremost, the idea of Devil Wears Prada getting a sequel is just an idea that has been tossed around since a few sequels and reboots of several decade-old movies have been financially successful. There currently is no plan to write a sequel to the film.
But even with just rumors of it potentially being written, fans have come out of the woodwork in droves to express their disinterest in this happening. And because of this, executives may want to pay attention to what is being said before throwing money at a script no one is interested in.
"A sequel is just totally unnecessary," one Reddit user wrote. "Hollywood may not realize this, but sometimes it’s fine for beloved movies to just be left alone."
Another user stated, "It's a 2000s classic and I don't think it needs a sequel that may or may not flop."
"Some magic you can't hope to capture twice because the circumstances were so precisely perfect the first time," a third Reddit user explained.
While it may be tempting to try to make a sequel out of a film that was successful nearly two decades ago, if the actors do not want to return because they do not believe in it and the audience does not have a taste for it, it may just be best to leave well enough alone.
Anne Hathaway Believes Devil Wears Prada Was From Another Era
Over the years the main actors from Devil Wears Prada have been asked if they would return for a sequel to the film. While some of the actors have had cute comments, such as Emily Blunt saying she would return for the fashion, it was Anne Hathaway who perhaps gave the best explanation as to why the film would no longer work.
And what she said while promoting other projects since her time on Devil Wears Prada was spot on.
"I just think that movie was in a different era," Hathaway explained. "Now, everything has gone so digital, and that movie centered around the concept of producing a physical thing, and it’s just very different now."
The ninth place choice for Andi went on to say, "It is tempting to think about Andy and Emily needing to get Miranda her coffee, and she’s somewhere in Europe and then along the way they pick up Stanley Tucci in Italy, who’s at a restaurant. It’s tempting, but I don’t think it’s going to happen."
However, Hathaway did throw out that perhaps Devil Wears Prada could be relaunched. By getting "some new people" there may be an audience for it. But returning with the same cast to carry on the story is something that Hathaway does not think would work well with audiences.
The Sequel To The Novel Did Not Perform Well
The sequel to Devil Wears Prada was published in 2013. Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns was highly anticipated by fans of the film as well as the first book.
But, unfortunately, the sequel did not live up to the original. And because of this, were a sequel to be made from the Revenge manuscript, it likely would not fare any better than the book itself did.
"Andy just so disappointing and annoyingly boring...," one critic wrote of Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. "Too bad her character is not as fun as the first book."
"I enjoyed the film version of 'The Devil Wears Prada' but this was a total disappointment," a third critic explained. "I was amazed that Andi could hold down a job she was so insecure, she was not the character in the film. The episodes with Miranda are not fleshed out and are predictable. I would not bother with any subsequent sequel.'"
With all the negative reactions fans had to Revenge, executives would be hard-pressed to use it to adapt into a movie. As a result, the sequel would have to be a complete rewrite and nothing like what the author intended. This is a move that may help to make the plot more believable but could serve to ruin the legacy of Devil Wears Prada nonetheless.
