Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus are all major streaming services vying for the lion's share of audience attention. Netflix is certainly leading the charge, but others are doing everything possible to keep up. Hulu, for instance, is paying the cast of Only Murders in the Building a fortune thanks to turning the show into a smash hit.
Woke is a Hulu series that just dropped its second season. Lamorne Morris has kept busy since New Girl, and his current show is generating some buzz. Naturally, potential audiences want to know what people are saying about the new season.
Let's see if there is some positive buzz about Woke.
'Woke' Is A Hulu Original
Two years back, Woke made its debut on Hulu, and there was a lot of intrigue surrounding the show. The title alone let potential audiences know about the subject matter that it would be tackling, and the series was going to feature a great cast.
Starring names like Lamorne Morris, Blake Anderson, and Rose McIver, Woke was able to rope in an audience and generate some buzz with its debut season.
This, of course, meant that reactions were right around the corner.
When talking about this with Complex, Morris said, "I'm feeling pretty good. I was nervous because of the subject matter, I didn't know how people would take it. I didn't know if people would think it was too hard, too light. It's different from your typical television show. A show like this definitely sparks conversation and people don't always agree with the sentiment on the show. So it's fun to look at. I try not to check Twitter just because I'm scared. I always get scared of what people would say that had nothing to do with the show at all. Like, "Hey, there's gaps in his teeth." Damn it, you're just insulting me.
Morris was right, as there were some strong reactions to the show's debut season.
Season One Has A Solid Reaction From Critics
At the time of this writing, season one of Woke has a 74% with critics over on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a respectable score, as the majority of critics felt like this show was doing some good things with its debut season.
In a Fresh review, Rob Thomas of Capital Times wrote, "'Woke' feels very much in conversation with them, and it manages to walk the line of being funny without trivializing the issues that it depicts. I want to see where Keef goes, and what he has to say, in future seasons."
Paste Magazine's Joyce Chen, however, was not as impressed.
"The series' message feels convoluted at best and a bit lost at worst, unsure of whether to mock or champion Keef's newfound wokeness," she wrote.
It's great to see that critics enjoyed the show, but the audience score is not as strong. Currently sitting at a 51%, Woke did not get a strong audience reaction. It's nice that critics enjoyed it, but audiences are the ones that will be tuning in on a regular basis.
Season two of the show was recently released, and there is interest in what audiences have had to say about it.
What Fans Are Saying About Season Two
So, what are people saying about season two of Woke? So far, there aren't too many reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but what little info is available is mixed, to say the least.
The two audience reviews are polar opposites, highlighting contrasting opinions well.
One user who loved it wrote, "This season is more focus and the characters seem to found their identities."
The other, however, was not so kind.
"OUCH. The first season was rough around the edges, but this is just as bad, if not worse. Which is weird because the actors seem to embody their characters more, but the writing is just soooo bad, there's just way too much cringe and politics. And just like the first season, they want the viewers to see nuanced social issues through one very specific political ideological lense. Seems very much like brainwashing to me."
The season isn't getting a warm reception over on IMDb at this time, but then again, season one was not exactly a smash hit on that site, either.
As people have time to watch the latest batch of episodes, the show's current score could very well change. As it stands, now, however, season two is not getting a lot of love.
Season 2 of Woke is available now on Hulu, so check it out while you still have the chance.
