Former Disney Channel star Zac Efron rose to fame in 2006 thanks to his portrayal of Troy Bolton in the High School Musical trilogy. Since then, Efron has established himself as more than just a Disney star, and over the years he appeared in famous projects like Hairspray, The Greatest Showman, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.
Recently, fans began noticing changes in Zac Efron's face and were quick to jump to conclusion that the actor had undergone certain plastic procedures. Keep on scrolling to find out what really happened to the actor and how it ended up influencing his career and private life!
What Happened To Zac Efron?
In a 2022 interview with Men's Health, Zac Efron opened up about his November 2013 accident. The actor was running through his house in socks, he slipped and ended up hitting his chin against a granite fountain. The actor had to undergo surgery.
"I was running through my house and I slipped and fell on my face," Efron revealed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. "Let me start over, because the story starts kind of cool. I have a fountain in my house. That's kind of dope, right? So I was running through and slipped on water and hit my chin on the fountain in my house. It's not a big fountain, but it's a fountain in my house."
In 2021, fans began speculating whether the actor had any plastic surgery done on his face, which is why Efron opened up about the surgery he had done.
Efron explained that after his accident, the masseter muscle (which are used for chewing) had to work harder, which is why they eventually " just got really, really big." The actor revealed that he still works with a specialist and does physical therapy to help his face muscles work properly.
The actor also admitted that he had no idea that people were talking about his face until his mother called him to ask if he had done plastic surgery. "If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do," Efron said, "I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work."
Will Zac Efron Be Able To Act After His Face Accident?
As previously mentioned, the accident itself happened in 2013, and Zac Efron has successfully acted since then. However, as his muscles changed so did his facial expressions which is why some might fear that the actor won't get as many roles anymore.
Back in 2020, even before fans started noticing the changes in his face, Efron has opened up about retiring from Hollywood. "I got to get out", Efron said in an episode of the Netflix show Down To Earth with Zac Efron. "It's not conducive to living a happy and mentally sound life", Zac continued, referring to his life in Hollywood.
Luckily for his fans, the actor hasn't slowed down just yet. In 2022 alone, Zac Efron appeared in three movies — Gold, Firestarter, and The Greatest Beer Run Ever.
Even though his muscles seem to have changed recently, the actor is still capable of visibly expressing emotions and portraying different kinds of characters.
Has The Accident Influenced The Way Zac Efron Lives His Life?
While it's doubtful that Zac Efron would ever get rejected for a role because of his face, it seems as if the actor has chosen to prioritize living a meaningful life over fame and fortune.
"I’ve really been taking time to focus on, you know, self-fulfillment and trying to find my groove," the actor told Men's Health.
The actor admitted that the work he put into the 2017 movie Baywatch wore him out. "I started to develop insomnia, and I fell into a pretty bad depression, for a long time," Efron admitted. "Something about that experience burned me out. I had a really hard time recentering."
"Really, it's like, it was so hard. You're working with no wiggle-room. You've got water under your skin which you're worrying about making your six-pack into a four-pack," Zac Efron added, referring to the strict diet and workout schedule he was on for the movie. "It's just stupid. It's not real. I'm happy that it worked and that it got me through it. I may do it again if it was something worthwhile, but I would wait until it gets to that."
Regardless of what his face looks like, today Zac Efron is more careful when picking the roles he plays. Because Efron's accident could have resulted in a worse outcome, it's safe to say that the actor now values his life a lot more. And he surely doesn't run around his home in socks anymore.
